Um, I live on Bloomfield and I didn't have power until about 8:30 the next morning. So it wasn't just the western part of town. I walked through Hoboken, from 10th/Jefferson to 2nd/Bloomfield, around 11pm and power was off in more places than it was on.
My rule in these situations is to move FAST. As soon as I knew it was not just a local power outage, I headed to the ferry terminal. Waited about 10 or 15 minutes in line to buy a ticket and got on the next boat to Hoboken. At that time, most folks in NYC were still standing around trying to decide what to do. People who showed up at the ferry just 30 minutes later than me ended up waiting for hours. I did the same thing on 9/11. Was home that day by 11:30AM.
