Yeah, I've been there. Just a couple of years ago in fact. One day I asked my boss's boss what I had to do for professional development/advancement. He just shrugged and said "good question, I'm not sure if I have an answer."
And that SOS was a MANAGER.
I said "well, I guess that's what I needed to hear." Then I got up, walked out, and started networking like never before. Within two months, I landed a job in another department for more $$ and a much brighter future. Plus my new management doesn't resort to sorry-ass cop-out answers to legit employee questions.
Telling the guy I was leaving and seeing the look on his face made all the effort worth it.
I can't recommend it enough.
