I was shocked when I saw the headline on CNN.com yesterday. I actually thought the opposite: I didn't think he sounded ashamed to be gay but more ashamed that he wasn't able to admit it until now (at least to the public) and even more so, that it caused him to have an extramarital affair.
The thing that I thought was a little ambiguous though was why he was resigning - because he was gay, because of the extramarital affair and undisclosed private life or because of the threat of lawsuit and the appearance of impropriety as a result. It is very sad though.
