- some would say start with: Frank Petter's translation of the Mikao Usui Sensei's Manual entitled: The Original Treatment Handbook of Dr. Mikao Usui
- you can find it at Amazon, com
- also, a decent resource that does not get lost in a lot of 'add-on' stuff that people do with Reiki that is not traditional Reiki is: The Reiki Sourcebook (Paperback)
by Bronwen & Frans Stiene" - also at Amazon, com
- once you are done reading take Reiki 1 with someone who will teach the hand-positions and give you some chance to practice - and do the attunements, hands-on

- historically, my own preference has generally been to go to workshops and opportunities for practical, hands-on energy work experiences (whether Reiki, shamanism, etc - and then, afterwards, do some selective reading to help sort out my experiences as I continue the practices
- as I tackle a new area of energy work, doing things in this order helps me stay as 'unbiased' as possible as I get started
- with Reiki, one learns the treatment procedures and practices to help begin getting connected to the flow of energy - then one has attunements

- and, at some point down the road you might pick up a copy of Diane Stein's book: "Essential Reiki"
- hope this helps
