Part of the pop up problem and general slowing down of a PC can also be caused by Trojen viruses. The spyware programs will not always kill these so if you do not have virus protection on the PC then it is well worth getting some.

Probally the best free pop up blocker I have come across is the one on the google toolbar. The toolbar does also have lots of other useful tools as well.

A firewall, although not 100% essential in many peoples eyes is however a good idea. This will stop unwanted programs accessing the internet sygate and Zone alarms offer free ones.
Finally a good safe registary cleaner that is idiot proof (I use it LOL) http://www.ccleaner.com/download/
This will remove unwanted and unneeded enteries from you computors registary and make it run faster as well.
