One alternative we were offered was to imagine a laser beam coming from the palm of our hand and that this beam would then complete whatever symbol is intended. This was not to prevent non reiki 11 folk from seeing the symbols, but as a more compact and personal way of directing the energy.
The third symbol, I was taught, was the distant symbol, so I am not sure why you would want to draw that over the recipient, anyway?
It is a constant source of fascination to discover how many different methods there are to acheive the same ends:)
