I have been reading all the replies to your original message on spells. Thought I'd put my four pen'arth in!
My master told me that you can invite the negative energies in, obviously by lack of self confidence. This can cause a chink in our armour were negative energy can get it.
On looking at everything, your partner knew the 'mother' was a witch. She also knew she did'nt like her. Perhaps the happenings were just a coincidence? But it all enabled the break up of relationship, so maybe not.
Your partner needs to bolster her self confidence and surround her self with a protective bubble. Also chant afermation,(can't spell!) perhaps something like: I am a strong and confident person, no one or thing can harm me.
