Hi there. This makes me thing of the psychological test with inkblots where different people see different things. I do believe there are evil spirits, but I do not think you are seeing them. I think you are seeing images of feelings or thoughts that are in you. I think it is happening while you are giving yourself Reiki, because healing is coming. The images will likely give way to an awareness of the feelings or thoughts as you approach the healing of them. They are ugly or fearsome precisely because these things are that way. I believe this is your subconscious showing you this much like a dream does.
Evil spirits would have no interest in watching you do Reiki except to distract you. I have definitely experienced these ugly faces at times especially when in a meditative state and sometimes before going to sleep. I have come to know them as what I have described to you above and have never had any harm except the little jolt of fear that I used to have. Observing that they are there seems to stop the show. I think that is just because the subconscious only want me to acknowledge them.
