I've noticed the issue of trust comes up a lot in these discussions. I'm not so sure it's your inner self that has discomfort with the symbols, it's sounds more like the rational mind.
Inner struggles this deep can't be answered by anything outside yourself. Only you can come to a place of peace and trust with the use of the symbols.
I consider Jesus to be my best friend. But the Bible hasn't been a resouce I can relate to, much as I've tried. So it's hard for me to relate to it as a recepie book for life. Keeping in mind, there is no reference to Jesus ever smiling in it.
Your path is your own, and if it doesn't feel right, that's all that matters. Time and experience will decide for you whether or not it's a tool that you want to incorporate. Give yourself permission to do what is right for yourself.
