Greetings, Clay: What works for us as individuals can be so specific to ourselves, there's only generalities that I could offer. Are you sure you are a "morning person"? All I can do in the morning is drink tea and growl! My best time is late evening, kids in bed, work done. Maybe another time of day is best for you. The suggestion of being barefoot is good ; at least it works for me.
