I have only browsed through a few of other peoples responses, so this following idea may already have been mentioned, I don't know!
I wondered the same thing myself, so asked my Reiki teacher. He said that unlike Yoga, which is using telric (earth based energies), Reiki uses cosmic energies, which explains why we begin from the crown and then work down.
