I think I just answered my own question, but see if you agree.
On rare occasions, I'll start doing Reiki on a client, who has not previously experienced Reiki, and notice that it feels like the Reiki is flowing in great "volume", but I start to feel that it is filling up the space AROUND the client, without actually entering into their body.
At the same time, the client appears not to go into the kind of mind state I'm used to seeing when I feel that strength of flow. They might close their eyes and breathe slower, but I surmise their analytical thoughts are going strong, from their eye movements and ability to converse.
At the end of the session, they report no unusual sensations, and of course the implied question is, "what's the big deal?" So I surmise that they had no conscious awareness of changes or energy flow within their body.
From my subjective view, it feels exactly as if the Reiki "bounced off". A little disconcerting, especially as the client appears, in the moment, to perceive little or no value in the experience.
But now, having written this, I see it could be equally plausible to speculate that the Reiki is simply filling up the client's aura, first, before it can enter their body. This honors the client's free choice in a special way, because s/he gets to decide, even if on a subconscious level, if and when s/he lets that auric healing infuse into the physical body.
My imp guides are saying, "sure, boss, whatever lets you sleep at night!" It can only be a speculation, unless maybe one day one of these special folks gives me an update interesting or unusual subsequent events -- even then it will be speculation. (Now that I remember, in one case independent witnesses noticed a significant improvement in the client for a week after I felt the Reiki "bouncing off", and actually it felt like it was spilling all over the floor that time! The client perceived nothing, but others saw improvement)
So, my questions to you, Reiki friends, are:
1) Have you ever had this subjective experience as I've described it?
2) If so, what's your theory?
