I've been studying, practicing, and teaching various kinds of martial arts for the last 12 years and as you might imagine the "Chakra" concept is very prevalent in many of these. The importance of the 7 major chakras and their thousands of lesser nerve bundles comes down to focus, either as a source of focus in balancing yourself and transferring your energy through your movements or by focusing on your target's "pressure points".

All of the 7 major chakras are prime pressure point targets, the crown of the head, the jugular notch, the solar plexus, the sternum, the dan tien, and the groin region. Even the third eye since a strike there tends to resonate for a while after the hit and obstructs your opponent's vision.

The best book I have seen on attacking the nervous system was actually an old Ninjitsu book made in the early '50s. I bought it for a couple bucks at a library sale when I was in high school, and it marketed itself as a full defense system for women using nothing but a hair pin needle to strike the nerve centers of the body. It went through the whole technique of disguising the needle decoratively in various ways, the best manner in holding and striking with the pin, and then gave a wonderful detailed map of all the meridians and individual nerve centers in the body (literally hundreds of them) along with the depth of penetration to hit the nerve center, and the effects this would have on the person.

I never used it with a pin, but it made my grappling a lot more effective since I knew of a lot more pressure points than my opponent did and could find creative ways to get out of their holds. It was really a marvelous book for all the technical detail in only 150 pages or so, I wonder if I still have it somewhere in my office...

I hope this helps some with your question, most of the more sophisticated martial arts do teach at least a working knowledge of the chakra system.
