i am an accountant. I am thinking of changing careers.. one of my thoughts was to get teacher certification. I cant stand accounting anymore...the numbers, the anal type-A personalities, the long hours and the lack of job satisfaction (ex. not helping anyone, just helping the rich get richer). I am also thinking of graphic design, nutrition/dietetics or getting an accounting job w/the federal govt. I think the federal govt treats employees better than corporate america; better benefits, less long hours, etc.
Have any of you gone back to school to change careers? Did you have to start from the bottom all over again when you started in your new career?
thanks

hello!
well on the teaching front.,...it is an amazingly satisfying job AND in urban renewal areas like jersey city, you can start teaching without the certification and get paid as a sub while you go to school to get your certification. then you will be paid as a full time regular teacher. It is called alternate route. i think it is great because you can still make money and go to school to get another degree. the summers off are nice too! :)

Every other Thursday at 10 am the Employment Resource Networking Group meets at Symposia Bookstore. This week the topic is exploring career change options. If you are available during the days, you may want to stop by.
Best,
Rachel

Thank you Megg, I was looking to hear from teachers. I was thinking of doing something like the alternate route.

hi--i am a teacher in jersey city. it's definitely a rewarding job at times. most of the time it's completely exhausting. it's been a crazy first year. i have very little time to myself even though it seems like you would because you get out at 3. there is grading to do, paperwork, bureaucratic bs to deal
