The Five Commandments of Organizing

From Forbes Magazine, Dorothy Breininger, a professional organizer, gives the five tips in organizing.

Thou Shalt ...

1. Have a Home for everything: If you are constantly losing something - a walet, your car keys, - it's probably because you don't have a home for that object. Hang a key box next to the door. Create a permanet spot on your dresser for your wallet

2. Start with a Blank Slate: Whether it's an entire office, a garage or just a junk drawer, don't stand in the middle and try to organize piece by piece. You'll get distracted. Pull everything out first so you can (look at point 3)

3. Sort and Purge: Divide the junk into five or six boxes. Keep, Toss. Donate. File, Distribute, Mail etc. That way, once you've pulled things out, half of the organizing job is already done.

4. Keep Like Things Together: It's the old kidergarten rule. Scissors go with scissors, sweaters goes with sweaters, tax statements go with tax statements. Containerize golf balls, matchbookcollections, old love letters. Put gadget manuals, financial statements, and recipres in three ring binders.

5. Set a timer. A 15 minute cleanup works wonders. Just because your life is a mess, doesn't mean you have to take all day to get it together.
