Computer help

Okay, it's been over two weeks since I've had Internet service.....help! I reloaded my xp to get my Norton software problems fixed. Now, they work properly, but I get an Error message saying that Windows does not detect a modem on my computer. I can still check my e-mail! When I do modem checks, it says that everything is fine! Ahhhh, anyone have any ideas?

Bob(RSGour) thought that it was something simple, but he came over and couldn't figure it out either.

I'm at the library now. *Please e-mail me if you have any suggestions to get it working again. Bob thought that maybe it was my Juno, so I have a disk coming via mail to reinstall to see if this helps!

Note for anyone who might have some ideas on how to help .... the JUNO software has no problem detecting/using the modem. email is handled from with the Juno software itself and works. But things like the web browser are no longer making use of the Juno internet connection. Unlike standard dial-up internet connections (but like AOL), Juno has its own software to connect to the net (doesn't use the standard Windows dialer) and then other appications SHOULD be able to make use of it. But re-loading xp seems to have changed some settings. I sugggested re-instaling Juno from a disc in the hope that it would automatically configure everything again. Hopefully that will work!

did you check to see if DNS (Domain Name Server) is set up correctly. If the computer is connected to the network but the browser won't bring up any pages, the first thing to check is DNS. To quickly test if this is a problem try to go to http://216.109.125.65. This should take you to yahoo. If it works, the problem is that your DNS is not set correctly.

Also, it could be the TCP/IP settings needing to be set-up for Juno to serve as the internet connection for other programs. But I'm not sure what info would get plugged in for Juno? I did try dealing with this and it just wasn't noticing the connection, but perhaps getting into the more advanced settings would work.

Thanks guys.

I ended up taking it to FlashTech(9th/Wash). The Tech couldn't figure out the errors, etc., so he ended up just having to empty out the computer and reinstalling my XP from scratch. He backed up everything. I wouldn't have known how to do that anyway. 4 days later and $160.....yuck.......back in business.

When I got it home, I couldn't read anything.,....I just got scriggley lines. It turns out that they would have to reconfigure everything back to my ancient monitor(10 yrs. old??), so I would have to take it in again. Instead, I went to Staples and bought a new monitor for $150. It works fine now.

Of course, now I need to reinstall MS Word and Excel again. I had borrowed it from a gf.

*Does anyone have either of these that I can use?! Let me know!
