One of the reasons why I go to the Salon in NY is the fact that is closer for me (since I live in the city). It has always been fun. Though it may turn people off that you have to buy something at the restaurant (minimum 5 dollars). I think it is well worth it.
Though you should reserve judgement until New Yorkers actually SHOW up. Due to snow, we had the lowest turn out.

The food is quite good and relatively inexpensive (for NY).
