Came home tonight to discover that all 4 of my pirhana that I have had for about 2 years now have gone to that great south american river in the sky. They have been sick for quite some time and I nursed them back to health but soon after they were sick again. Guess this time it was too much for them. I admit there was a little neglect on my part as well. To cure a 55 gallon tank it takes a small fortune in pills, plus partially draining the tank a few times, a real pain in the arse. They barely ate gold fish anymore for some reason, they didn't really entertain me much so I find myself not having much sympathy.
Anyway, not sure what I'm gonna do now. Maybe I'll go out and buy 5 red belly pirhana "pups" and start over again. Or perhaps I can track down a pet store that has true black pirhana (they are even more aggresive then red bellies). Perhaps a bunch of just plain tropical fish but that would be kind of boring. A snake? Ehhh dunno. Maybe a lizard that eats crickets and stuff. Dunno.
Any suggestions?
P.S. First person that says buy some grouper fish will be in a world of hurt!

Steve,
So sorry for the loss of your fish. You may just want to take a break from fish for a few months.

Steve,
Sorry to hear this. I agree with Windy. You should wait a bit before doing anything.

Steve, I'm SO sorry to hear that! Nancy had a good idea about a fish alternative. I know how time consuming and expensive it can be to maintain a fish tank that size from my uncle, and if you don't have your heart in it, it can be a real chore.

Thanks everyone. I do have to say though in the 2 years I had them they were pretty low upkeep. They got sick only a few times before but quickly recovered. What I should have done was take the sick one out of the main tank and put him in the smaller tank on his own so he wouldn't infect the others. Oh well too late now. I'm not sure what the life span is of a piranha but I'm sure 2 years was a good run for them.
I think when I get an afternoon to spend soon I'm going to drain the tank completely, clean the gravel, scrub it clean, etc and start a new family of red bellys ;p I'll have them trained to kill in a few weeks so they will be worth many a night worth of entertainment for me and my friends!

Would you be interested in two great rats? Albino Andy and Ratso Rizzo are really tame and sweet - but I find myself not having any time for them at all.

Did your fish have names??
I would stay away from something like an iguana. You have to buy them heat rocks and lamps and they can grow to be pretty large. Plus, it would be kind of sad to have such a large creature all cooped up in a cage - unless of course you plan to let it roam around your apt. but somehow I think you won't do that ;-) You can always ask Daphna about snakes.
