wine tasting nitty gritty

Wow-

It's great to see all the interest in the wine
tasting group. Now it's a matter of setting a date-
I propose Thursday Aug. 16th for the first meeting.
Now for the location... any suggestions?

The date sounds fine to me. Anyone else got an opinion?

I can see three options for where to do this. At someone's house, at a bar, or at a BYOB restaurant. A bar would probably get expensive, if we bought several bottles of wine. A BYOB restaurant is probably a good idea, although at a restaurant sometimes it is hard to mingle and talk to everyone because everyone's in their seats. Then everyone can bring a bottle to share. Someone's house would work well, but then again, I don't know all of you QUITE well enough yet to volunteer! :-)

So ARE there any BYOB places in HOB?

How about Vale, the Spanish/tapas place on Washington? They're BYOB and tapas can be a good match with wine. Maybe we could even have a theme, like all Spanish wines for the first wine tasting.

The 16th works for me as well. A restaraunt would definatly be a good place to have it. The Spanish place Jenn mentioned sounds interesting. I have never been there. If we have enough people interested we might even be able to work out a special arrangment with one or more restaraunts to meet regularly.

Sounds good to us. We like the sound of tapas & wine.

Sounds like a perfect suggestion! I've never been there but I'm all for Tapas.... (Hey perhaps we can taste some Sangria in addition to wine!)

I'm a little reluctant to have it at a restaraunt... I mean
realistically it will be a group of about 12, which might
be a little uncomfortable... I'll call Vales and see what
they say. But one way or another, we are on for Thursday
Aug 16, so mark it on your calendar...

Another idea- what is Hoboken's policy about public
consumption of alcohol? Could we have it in the Gazebo
on the waterfront and make a picnic of it?

Yes, a restaurant may be too small for everyone. And I'm sure the owners would want us to eat dinner there.

I like the gazebo idea, if its legal. I hope we don't end up holding our wine bottles in paper bags, worrying every time a cop walks by. :)

But either way count me in.

At what time would we meet? To throw in my 2 cents, 9-10pm might be a bad time, so hopefully we can start before then, and I may end up leaving early.

It's illegal in Hoboken to drink outside, unless you're at a restaurant w/outdoor seating.

I think the alcohol rules in this country are preposterous.

It's amazing......you can't drink outside but you can sleep on the streets or in the train station.

shouldn't that be preposterior?
And I want to sleep in the station too.
.
Now this might sound a bit daft, but I hate (the taste of) alcohol and am therefore a teetotal. That notwithstanding, I want to come along because I think I might be missing the joy that good wines seems to bring to so many. So it might be possible, in the same way that I now love many foods I hated as a child, that I can find a selection of wines I could get to savour.
