Today's Tragedy

I have been watching the news all morning and am at a loss for words. I know that there are many Hoboken Residents that work at the World Trade Center. I only hope that most people have been able to get out of the buildings before they collapsed. I'm sure that everyone probably knows by now but the hospitals are looking for volenteers to donate blood. There are well over 100 people in critical condition. My thoughts go out to everyone who has been affected by this. This is the kind of thing we think could only happen in the movies. Reality is far more scary.

I work across the street from WTC and I can't find the words to describe the scene. I just got home 30 minutes ago. A friend and I are heading over to St. Mary's in a little while to donate blood. Later.

I was at St. Mary's at noon, and a cop outside told me they weren't set up for blood donations. There were signs on the doors to call Red Cross at 1-800-GIVE-LIFE. I can't get through. Two questions: (1) Is St. Mary's now accepting blood donations? (2) If not, anyone know a place in Hoboken that is?

I called the Hoboken police and they said that a donation center was being set up at St. Mary's. It should be up and running by now.

My thoughts are with everyone who has a loved one downtown today. May they all come home safe and sound.

I don't know. But if anyone finds out please post the info. I live close to St Marys and will attempt to find out. I sure that they will be setting up to accept blood donations sometime today. Mikki was caught on the path train this morning and ended up taking the ferry to Weehawkin back. She says that they were loading up medical supplies to ferry back to NYC.

I am stuck uptown on the UWS and really just want to get home, but I'm terrified to walk all the way down to 33rd to the ferry.

St. Mary's is taking names and phone numbers for blood donations. They will call you when they are set up. They told me it would be a few hours (I was there at 2pm).

Hi Everybody!

Unfortunetly I was in the WTC when all the drama was going on. I have footprints on my back, my knees are badly scraped and I thank god thats all thats the matter with me. I'm so heartbroken for all the dead and injured. I haven't been able to stop crying from all the horror that I've seen.

Well please say a quick prayer for my honey. As of right now I haven't heard from him and he was there too. May god bless you all and hope that you allll get home safely. Today is a good example of how we all need faith in our lives.

Naomi,

I'm so glad you made it out all right. My prayers go out for your husband. I hope he is all right. When Mikki was on the ferry she met someone who was on one of the higher floors when the first plane crashed and he was able to get out, so the chances are very good that he is all right. Unfortunatly phone services are out all over so its hard for people to communicate and tell their loved ones they are all right.

I have a very good friend who works at the WTC and I'm hopping that he is all right as well.

I made it home about 2pm. Getting off the path train at 33rd, I looked south and saw one of the towers in flames. I walked around numb for a while. Trying to get back on the path train was hell, even worse when they closed it down.

I met up with some Hoboken guys and I found my way to the ferry at 38th. One of them worked at Morgan Stanley on the 60ish floor of the WTC. He along with all his coworkers got out and are safe. I hope that is the story we hear from lots of people.

So it has been really scary not to be able to use the cell phone and contact loved ones. I am numb. I just want to say that my heart goes out to everyone who is waiting to hear from a loved one or friend. My heart and compassion goes out to all.

My heart goes out to those who were affected by the attacks. Naomi, I hope that your husband is fine.

I couldn't believe some people had the gall to crack jokes while waiting for the ferry. How many of us have friends and relatives that work there or in DC or PA?

In addition to the blood banks, does anyone know where I can donate food, money, or other items?

They have info about donations at St. Marys. They need just about everything, including volunteers.

I'm amazed by people's crass attitude about these things and the insensitivity to crack jokes like that in public. But I also know that sometimes humor is a person's only way of dealing with something so horrible.

I hope all of our loved ones come home healthy.

Hi Everybody..

Well Mr. Honey finally showed. He's a bit injured, tired and upset but he's ok. Thank you all so much for your good wishes.

The only good thing that has happened through this tragedy has been the kindness I have seen in so many people. I had absolutely no money to get home and I was crying like a baby. A total stranger insisted I take $20 to get home, strangers hugged one another, held hands as they ran, folks fell others helped them up.

I hope you're all safe! Let's all say a prayer for all the families and friends of the injured and dead.

I'm definetly in for the blood donation at St. Mary's. I'll be going tomorrow.

Have a great night HobokenCafe friends!

I like to donate but dont know when I can go. I am at work calling everyone from the company to see if they are ok.

If I am not totally exhausted from calling everyone, I will stop by before going home.

Naomi,

I'm so glad to hear that your hubby is safe. I have heard so many reports of people helping everyone else out during this tragedy. It is good to know that we all come together and help during a time like this.

I'm so glad to learn that your husband made it out of there!
I was working across the street at 130 Liberty and we had some doubts about our survival.

It's also great to learn that New Yorkers (who usually get such a bad rap) were ready, willing and able to help those in need.

To the members of the Cafe: I'm so impressed and moved by the kind thoughts and caring that you've expressed. You are truly a group of people that are far from ordinary. I'm proud to be a part of this group!

Mine and Lucy's thoughts are with you. My finace Lucy works at a school in town and we are hoping none of the children's parents were involved, nor any of the schools in town. This event will have an immense effect on this town.

Our hopes are for you.

Naomi, I'm glad you and your hubby are all right.

I'm anemic, so unfortunately I can't donate blood. :(

And I know I was cracking jokes with my co-workers at the ferry. But it was my only way of dealing with it.

I saw the first plane crash into the WTC, and I was reeling so much that I can't remember why I felt compelled to take the train in.

I pray for all who have lost, and those who survive will always remember with profound sadness this day.

The HobokenCafe.com folks are amazing. I'm so proud to be part of this community. Thank you all so much for being so gracious in good thoughts and prayers. I feel so lucky to be alive, to have my husband. I'm just so sick and heartbroken for all the people going through this, families missing, dead. God help them all.

Cornel made a great suggestion, all of us getting together to talk and console one another. I can really use that. Thank you all for being so wonderful to me. Yesterday was the worse day of my life (along with everybody else in NYC/NJ) and you all made me feel so much better. This tragedy has brought out so much kindness and love, people caring so openly. The only good thing that it brought.

May you all have a great day ;o)
