Born in the Holy land of Washington Heights, Toro earned a B.A. in English and Theater from Rutgers University. A teaching artist in New York and New Jersey, Toro was a semi-finalist of the Nuyorican Poets Café Grand Poetry Slam in 1995. He was a resident writer/ performer at Dixon Place for the 1996 series, Y Que!: A Latino Poetry and Play Reading Series.
Toro’s poetry has been published in The Aquarian Arts Weekly, where he served as the Editor of the Theater Page. In 1997, his play “BH” was work-shopped at INTAR, NYC for their New Works Lab Series. The play was later produced, in 2000, by Urban Renaissance Productions for Trinities Trilogy at Theater 22 in NYC, along with another of his plays, “One Way.” Toro spent 1998 teaching and writing in Ankara, Turkey. Toro has performed his Hip-Hop influenced poetry throughout the U.S. and Europe, on the Hottest Poets Radio Satellite Network poetry slam series, and was winner of the 2001 PopThink! internet poetry slam.
Toro has made guest appearances on WBAI’s Latino Journal and in the Documentary feature, The Source, starring Johnny Depp and Dennis Hopper. In 2001, Toro was awarded a residency by The Atlantic Center for the Arts in Florida to collaborate with poet Saul Williams and DJ Spooky.
