The good thing is that you do everything(applying & weekly filing) over the telephone or On-line now! If you live in NJ and work in NY, I have the telephone numbers for you....call right away, after you get laid off!
** Take the taxes out! If you don't, you'll have to pay them at the end of the year. They'll ask you. The most a person can get is $405, after taxes it's only $364.50 each week!

In NJ, you have to call the number (the number is in the Hudson Country yellow pages.) They set up an appointment and ask some basic questions. Then on the date, you have to go to Journal Square, talk to a rep (be sure to bring your id and SS# card) and apply for unemployment. Of course, if you have the laid off letter; it helps.
Unfortunately, if your company is run by a bunch of jerks, the company can state that you were let go due to misconduct. In which case, you have the right to appeal. It goes to another case worker and then the case worker listens to both side on the hearing date. The case worker makes a decision. The losing side can make an appeal in which it moves to court.
I remember getting about 400 per week (no taxes taken off). They asked you a bunch of question through an automated system. If you worked part time, you still get unemployement, but you get only a portion. If your part time surpasses the unemployment, that might end your unemployment altogether.

Ooh, bad experience Gerry....I'm glad that I didn't have to go to the NJ office. It's so much easier when you worked in NYC........all automated!
Yea, I looked into the PT work, but didn't think it was worth it. If one could find a "cash, under the table" job to supplement the Unemplymt. check...bonus!
