Used to be easier that now. I taught bartending school and was a bartender in Ft. Lauderdale for years. Make a list of bars you would love to work at and that you "fit in with". Hoboken is difficult because you have to get that stupid bar card at the police station (like $100) before any bar will hire you. Anyway, call these bars and ask ot speak to the owner and explain that you really love the place and want to work there for tips only and you would also be willing to barabck to get started there and/or take lousy shifts (don't expect Friday nights only if you have no experience)...Have you bartended before? If not - get bartending for Dummies. Read it book Study it and highlight drinks - then get index cards spiral bound and write the most popluar drink on the cards, grouping them by type (martinis, highballs, lowballs, etc.) Lear a bit about wine (differences between a merlot, cabernet, etc)... If you are working at say, a beer mostly crowd, you need to know less about fine wines and martinis and scotches, etc. But if your goal is a good lounge bar, you need to do a lot more homework. And make sure your conversation and people skills are A-1.

Bartending is an art form. Good luck! If you need anything, just ask...
