Commuting to Long Island?

I'm considering a job on Long Island. I would take the Path & then the LIRR to the Mineola stop.

I was just wondering if anyone has done this commute before....How did you like it?

It sucks monkey ass. I have been working in Plainview Long Island for four years, at first part-time with intermittent access to a car, now full-time with full-time access to car. It reeks. Takes a long time and is expensive. To go by public transit, partially because of timing of trains/busses I had to leave earlier and get there too early, had to take a bus or van into the city, then the Long Island Rail Road, then a bus, then walk for 15 minutes. And I didn't have keys to get in early. What is cool is that you can sit and read and eat and sleep a little but not too much or you miss your stop. In your car you are more at home. Books on tape help. I don't remember how far Mineola is, but, depending on where it is and when you leave, I could possibly give you a ride at least there sometimes [sometimes I start the day at another location in Long Island and on the way back often leave very late or don't go straight home]

That much, huh? Thanks Daphna :)

Well, The job will be good for me. If I get the offer, I will do the LIRR commute. I heard that it's not fun when you miss the train though. I would consider leasing a car around Fall/Winter.

We'll see what happens.

I agree that the critical piece here is the good job! [I was just addressing the commute question...]

You will spend a lot of time and money on the commute. Why not just move out to L.I.? Its cheaper than Hoboken and you will have _hours_ more per day to enjoy yourself instead of sitting in Penn Station or on the PATH or LIRR.

<j/k rant>
What are you doing!?!?!? We want people to stay in Hoboken. Not kick them out.
<j/k rant off>

Actually, my place (with my aunt) in Forest Hills which hooks up to LIRR (about a 7 block walk) that is going up for rent in about 1-2 months from now. Though I think my aunt and I decided to push everyone (who has been asking about the place) to the realator. We will see what happens in the next couple of months. And I don't know if you can get to Mineloa from from that track.

Yes, I am considering a move. I just bought my apartment a year & 1/2 ago, but a house would be nice. I heard that the Island is more expensive though.

The LI commute will cost me $94. more a month (by Mass Transit $154. mthly ticket + 60. for the Path = $214.)than when I worked in NYC.

I haven't worked in 5 mths. now & this is the best job that has come my way yet, so we'll see.

Well, Daphna was right........this commute is long! I did it today. I left my interview at 6PM. I took a bus to the Mineola Train station, waited for the train to Penn Station, went up & out, walked a block to the path to Hobo., & bus to my place 8PM!!! Scary. If I get this job (which I really want), there are nights(during sales) where I won't get out of the store until after 11PM!

Good news, they pay my commute expense($1200.)......but still, I will probably move....it's a nice area.
