Here are 3 websites of small group adventure companies. I can personally vouch for Explore and Intrepid, but I've heard good things about G.A.P. too.

www.GAPadventures.com (mainly central and s. america, more likely to "rough it")

www.intrepidtravel.com (specialize in asia but offer trips all over. They have a wide range of trip style from "premium" with cushy accomodations to "basix" which go far off the beaten path with the possibility of even the most basic amenities not present).

www.exploreworldwide.com (they go everywhere in the world! Trips can be physically rigourous --if that's what you choose-- accomodations run the gamut from dark and grotty to bright and sufficient. This is not luxury travel.

If you are travelling solo you will be paired up with a roommate of your same gender. Age range on trips can be broad with older people on intrepid's "premium" trips to younger people on G.A.P.'s camping trips. Then again, this is just a generalization. Usually a bunch of people on each trip are solo travellers.
