I am off to London for MLK weekend and I have never been there before. Do people have suggestions on things I must see or do while I am there?

Thanks!

Well, since I'm from London ;-)

1) buy an off-peak travel card (valid after 9.30am) for each day. It will get you round the Tube, Buses and the Rail (watch the zones though else you may get fined!).

2) you're gonna get screwed on the exchange rate. Dollar is weak against the pound. I just use my ATM card over there. You'll pay less commision/fees than changing money for the weekend. Everywhere accepts Visa/Mastercard.

3) Plenty of tourist things to do for free. visitlondon.com has some good ideas. Definately go and see the Changing of the Guard. http://www.londonfreebies.co.uk/changing_of_the_guard.htm

The London Eye, Harrods Food Hall, The Tower of London and Hamleys Toy Store (on Regent Street). Plenty of bargains on Oxford Street since the sales are on.

9) Wrap up warm. I was over there last week and it was cold, damp and dark! It was dark from 3.30pm till 8am!!

If you have a day, you can take the tours. Remember, the tubes shutdown after a certain time so take a black cab. There should be a three day pass you can buy to use all of the tubes (like the unlimited metrocard).

Credit Cards automatically do the exchange rate at the time of purchase. And I am not sure if ATM are available (it has been awhile) but if you have Cirrus, they do accept that (it has been awhile for me since it has been 11 years since I have been there)

4 Season days means that all four seasons will occur on that day (winter, spring summer and fall). That's all I can think of.

Thanks for the suggestions. One long weekend is too short a time but I am very excited. I think I may go to Paris one day too so that leaves me with two full days anyway to tour London.

I did go on this trip - I had a great time (fyi - there are like three Bikram studios there too, although I didn't get a chance to go). I love London! There were so many great things about it--I could definitely live there. The exchange rate is a killer though. I have a friend who is working in London right now so I might take another trip there this summer before she comes back to the states but I am not sure.

Speaking of vacations....I need one. Not sure where to go on one yet but I want to got probably before mid Sep't because all hell breaks loose with my work schedule after that.

Careful where you go if it's past mid-August. Hurricane season for Bahamas and the Caribbean really kicks up 8/15-11/30. While technically hurricane season starts June, June is an amazing time to travel to that region - the weather is great and it's the shoulder season so prices are lower. If you are looking for fun fun fun I recommend Club Med Turks & Caicos. Very easy all inclusive flight, accom. & food. (not liquor). For a romantic getaway (if you have $ to burn) you might consider the Buccaneer on St. Croix. (usvi). Also the Stella Maris on Long Island, Bahamas is cheaper and is a real out of the way romantic getaway.
