It is now commonly believed Usui-Sensei gave each student 'Reiju' or empowerment/attunement on a regular basis.

This is generally held to have a deeper, more accumulative effect than the 'Quick-Fix' Denju (initiation) set we are more familiar with in the Takata Lineage.

Yes, I agree completely!

[nor, for that matter, I would surmise, did he utilise an "at distance" version of Ketsueki-Kokan-Ho... as someone not a million miles from this list might!]

and it is also surmised that he did not use the 'Denju'-type 3-level Initiation Takata-Sensei used for transmit Reiki;
and therefore would not have utilised the distant attunement process (based on this method) which is used successfully today by numerous Reiki Teaching Masters [of various Reiki Styles and Lineages] to great effect.

Usui-Sensei also probably never even uttered the word 'chakras' - let alone taught about them...

and, I'm sure the very idea of Reiki-ing a computer to fix its glitches never even entered his head (I don't think 1920's comptometry machines (adding machines) suffered from the same problems!)

But as people keep reminding me, Reiki - just like Time - doesn't stand still

Reiki seems to inspire creative uses for itself - and when it does, all we can do is apply them, and "get out of our own way and let the Reiki flow".

As someone who has received all their Denju-type initiations (Reiki, Seichem, etc., etc.) via direct 'hands-on' contact, (and passes attunements/initiations in this way too,) I would, on the whole, agree that either distant Denju or distant Reiju - as an Initial (and I stress: 'Initial') attunement/initiation is possibly not an ideal approach.

However, once an individual has had either Denju or Reiju 'in person', I am of the opinion that receiving 'distant' Reiju is a valid and effective method of facilitating the deepening and grounding of the individual's connection.

Coming from a background of purely touch-contact and close proximity aura-work based therapeutic modalities as I do, I was initially - on hearing of the possibility of carrying out distant Reiki attunements/initiations - unsure as to the validity of such practice, and began investigation to attempt to determine its value.

Objective, empirical study is not an easy thing in a case such as this - the Reiki experience being a personal and subjective one - so I go with the feedback from those on the receiving end, so to speak.

The ongoing 'Reiju Experience' project which I am running at All Energy-Therapies Web is simply a result of that feedback.

This much from my personal experience, which, as you rightly say, is a very individual matter:-

I received my attunements hands-on. I was repeatedly the only one who "felt nothing". I seemed to have no sense of the energy flowing, even when people whom I was treating said they felt a strong flow coming through my hands. I continued to experience nothing.

Through all levels of initiation, and after long periods of energy work, I felt ... precisely nothing.

The first time I felt anything was at the Saura site on "Reiki Revolution". A slight out of body experience.

I have recently visited James' Distance Reiju webpage, and given it a try out of curiosity, to see what might be learnt. I used the photograph as an aid to concentration, not thinking of it necessarily as a channel. But I did ask Usui Sensei to act as my guide in the process of deepening my connection with the universal energy source.

Well, I must say it "happened" for me. The earth moved. I was surprised to feel a great heat at the base of my spine, and a distinct feeling of floating, which I took to be the raised vibration of my energy body being temporarily out of musical harmony with the lower vibration of my physical body. This took a few minutes to readjust itself. I spent a long time over this, as it felt so good I didn't want it to stop.

I'm grateful for this experience, and hope to experience it again on returning to the Distance Reiju page from time to time.
