Dear Readers,
Have any of you read this book by Lama Surya Das yet? Have just started this this book about dealing with attachment, loss & change.
Attachment is particularly interesting relative to our American culture. Self examination in conjunction with my reading has suggested that maybe there is nothing that Im not attached to!! :)
It always "blows my mind" when the lightbulb goes on, no matter how dim the light or the wit!
peace & joy,

holobon,
You got it pontiac! In my studies as an addictions counselor i found that everyone has an issue with attachment, although attachment is more of an issue with some than others.
Hey, why do you think Buddah sat under a tree for so many years in meditation? To discover that the cause of all human suffering was attachment! Mmmm! interesting eh?
I know a lot about the subject of attachment and sometimes I think it is more of a liability than an asset, because I see other people's attachment issues more than my own and theirs freak me out! lol We are all mirrors, that is what really freaks me out.

- one view of "attachments" is that they have to do with how we "grasp" at some things or 'reject' other things (aversion)
- one Key to all this seems to be to be able to learn Mindful balance so that as we enter the Bardo upon passing the things (including relationships) to which we were "attached" by our grasping or aversion do not lead us back into another incarnation
- for Grasping and Aversion generate beaucoups of Karma that will have to be dealt with during this or a later lifetime

Dear Firekeeper,
:)...Yes, we are more than the moment. It has taken much reading & thinking to get to an understanding that at any one time, I am either in the moment ( in my mind) or in the past or the future. When I recognize slipping into the past or future it amazes me that it is such a subtle habit.
Funny that you should mention the bardo. I have been reading the Tibetan Book of the Dead & the Tibetan Book of Living & Dying for about 2 years & I just recently grasped the concept of the projections of mind. ( dont mean to suggest that I " know" it..just that a lightbulb went on in a very dim hallway!!)At this rate I will need another lifetime or two to grasp the basics of Buddhism.
peace & joy,
holobon

Namaste all!
I wanted to raise the point that detachment does not mean not loving and caring. Sometimes people get confused about that.
Bhagavatgeetha, the Hindu epic quotes: "Karmanye Vadhikaraste Ma phaleshu Kadachana..." meaning do your duty without getting attached to the results.
So if we have family, we are expected to love and care, but no need to get attached.
