Otoharo!

In '66 I learned to work a puzzle which today I have translated into quilt patterns and have my finished quilt on my bed. It is spectacular!

In case you are interested, the puzzle consists of 12 pieces what fit together into a rectangle. IT is very difficult to work. Through the years I have found over 1,500 solutions. Most of these can be shifted by simply switching two pieces around. I selected 24 indiviual designs, drew them out on fabric, colored them with crayons, quilted them.

The puzzle: (you can have it whatever size you want but I give it in i inch .) Out of cardboard, cut one piece that is 5 inches x 1 inch. Cut one piece that is four inches with one 1 inch square at the end making an L shape. Then four inches with one i inche square at the second position. then one three inches with a i inch block at the end and another sticking above it, which I call an h. Another three inch with two more at the end making a square (as in a carpenter tool). Then three inch piece with two at the top making a T. Then three inch with two at its bottom making a fat block of four with a head sticking up. Three more are difficult to describe. A W is a two inch block with another two inch block slid down and another 1 inch block at the end. (two and two and one). Then a cross or plus sign.+ a 1 inch with four others at its four sides. Then what I call a 5. Three down, 1 at the end and 1 at the middle back. This makes twelve pieces.

When I make mine, I draw them first then cut them out. If you are using 1 inch as the measurement of one block then the reactangle will be six inches wide and ten inches long. All the above blocks can be fitted together in such a way that they fit into the rectangle.

My color scheme was cool colors on the left and warm colors on the right. EAch block is different so when colored each piece makes a mixed up, jagged color plate. It is exquisite.

I love my new quilt. And now I rest my eyes!
