I am at a Crossroads with my job and am an ESL teacher for adults which I love the trouble is my program is always grant funded and not so secure from year to year. However I do alot of administrative work for our adult ed program and am currently pursuing a 6th year in administration. The director is retiring next year. Part of me wants to go for his job another is afraid I won't have a life because he is there 24/7 and I need balance. I need more money and job security but am fearful of all of the changes and new people I will have to deal with and the politics and not teaching my students. i am senign reiki to the situation but seem to have an inner struggle with all of this. What can make me more ettled and at peace with this????

Sounds as if you would choose this position if you knew you could still have a life. Could his 24/7 be his choice? Could you do the job without devoting as much time? My take is: In this age of funding cuts, unless you teach special ed, no job is real secure. Schools in my area are laying off teachers and not hiring new ones when teachers retire. I would send reiki, put in my ap and give the situation to God for my highest good. Should you get the job and decide it is not for you, you can always put in for another opening.

Hello Eirelassey,

It is so hard to start something new. No person likes to step out of his/her comfort zone and risk feeling uncomfortable. If your problem is security and this new job will give you security maybe it is there for you to take...on the other hand...maybe it is there for you to see how much you love your current job and don't want to sacrifice passion for financial stability. I recently took a paycut in order to be able to do a job that I love instead of one that felt like a job.

Good luck with your decision,

Love and light,

Jessica

eirelassey,

/*\ Namaste :-}}

- trying to balance on the edge of a knife is frequently not much fun

- which way to step perhaps having to do with the rewards or perils involved - which includes, I suppose, walking the edge a little longer before stepping off

- too, are there others competing for this admin job??

- for some it seems to boil down to 'get a life' or 'get ahead'. For myself?? balance is important.

>:-}}

- as for sending reiki to the situation?? Make sure you get the lion's share.

Hi eirelassey,

Although he may be doing the job 24/7, does it mean you would? Maybe you would be better organized than he is, or maybe you can just hold a firmer ground and say 'my work is between these hours - no more, no less'. Is he the type of person that just 'does it himself, because it's easier than explaining desired results' to someone else?

I have worked a few positions where I felt I was expected to work long hours at the expense of family, a life, and sanity! LOL!!! Know what I learned from that? It's not what the employers put on you, it's what you put on yourself! To be saying "I have to do this, I have to take care of that", etc. is actually you saying, 'I cannot let anyone down, including myself'. One good way to get around that is to ask yourself if the world will stop if you don't get that 'one more thing' done. So you will make the choice whether you want to be a workaholic or not. No one else will do that for you. It's always YOUR CHOICE!!!

Another thing to look at - if you could get into that position would it enable you to help out anyone who is going to be retaining positions like the one you currently hold? Could this be of benefit to the students and other teachers in the long run, as well as to yourself?

And of course - the love of your work. Financial stability is one thing, but enjoying your work is something else entirely. Of course, one can have both (or so I've heard LOL!!) so maybe it is possible in your future too.

I wish you all the best with your decision. It will be a hard one to make, but the good things always seem to take the harder road.

With light and love,
Featherpoint

Further to the good advice you've already received here, also keep in mind how some people, especially workaholics, are completely identified with their job. Perhaps your current boss only has his job for self-identity. You have other passions, including Reiki, and if they choose you, it's because you have something new and wonderful to bring to the job, and perhaps they want someone a little less omnipresent or controlling. Remember too, to think creatively about the position -- would you like to split it somehow, as in doing less hours for less money, by bringing in an associate or assistant who takes on duties you don't want for the money you give up? One of the pros for an organization in this situation is that when an additional person is brought deeper into its workings, that brings much more creativity, continutity, and career development to everyone as well as the institution.

I know one organization that re-thought a vacant top managerial position and decided to become a collective instead, with each department taking on some of the manager's old duties -- while this may be too radical for your organization, perhaps a fresh perspective on the structure might stimulate new ideas and directions that your interviewers will appreciate.

And not all interviews lead to an immediate job -- some, however, lead to a different, great job some time later, if one has made a positive impression on the interviewers. Besides, it'll teach you a lot -- interviews are fantastic for that.

Go for it. :)

Thank you for your insights they are very helpful to me. I have put this in my reiki grid and hope that it turns out for my highest good. I also included that the job brings me financial stability, harmaony, balance, focus and rhythm to my life. Alot to ask but why not???Nothing ventured nothing gained I will throw my hat into the ring and see what the universe brings me I also asked that the higher ups recognize my special talents and skills and maybe thats where a new position could come!!!!!!WEEEEEEEEE!!Thanks again!

OToharo!

eirelassey, You do not have all the answers before hand. You will only know when you do the job your way. A truly good administrator, does not have to make it 24/7. It would not be forever if you changed y our mind and sought something else.

You can't cross bridges before you get there.
