I have been in intense studying listening to the spoken word "revelations" on cd and have been getting many insights to the reiki symbols and how they translate to the word of God. Anyone know of any that did any work on this subject...most info i know about is from a buddahist perspective or wiccan perspective. thanks

Hi Espirit

Could you elaborate more?
The Reiki symbols are buddist symbols, unless anyone can tell us differently?.

You can try contacting Marsha Burack, . She's a Christian healer who recently developed a self-guiding Reiki CD based on the Lord's Prayer.

Well, that depends on what you mean by 'symbol'.

ONE of the Reiki symbols is a Buddhist Symbol (i.e. a visual glyph)- at least it certainly seems to be derived from one - the SHK is almost certainly a stylisation of the shuji or sanscrit character kiriku (pronounced k'rik) - symbol of Amida Butsu

HSZSN and DKM, rather than being 'symbols' per se are Japanese phrazes written in kanji characters - though admittedly they can be said to have a Buddhist-related symbolic significance

However CKR is most likely a glyph from Shinto-based tradition - not Buddhism

Hi espirit

Some suggestions - but I emphasise: Suggestions:

CKR can be conceptually translated as something like: "In the presence of the spirit(s)"

Takata-Sensei translated it as 'put the [spiritual] power here'

it has elsewhere been given as meaning "spirits direct(from God)

thus, CKR could, I feel, possibly be considered, in a Christian sense, to be a 'calling upon the Holy Spirit'

DKM - the 'Great Kômyô', or 'Great Bright Light', alludes to 'Enlightened Nature' or the Radiance of a numinous being or deity

so perhaps it could be seen in terms of the 'Light of the World', 'the Light of God'

SHK speaks of 'Emotional Calm' or 'Spiritual Composure'

it brings to mind that scene in the boat on Galilee:

"Why are you afraid?" said Jesus. "Have you no faith?" Stretching his hands out over the lake, he spoke to the wind and the waves: "Peace, be calm." Instantly the storm died down and the lake grew still...

and all that this passage symbolically implies

HSZSN: "Correct Thought (Mindfulness) is the essence of being" ... well...

anyone else got any ideas?

Obviously I meant:

DKM - the 'Great Komyo', or 'Great Bright Light'.....

[thats what happens when ya (lazily) try to cut-n-paste sentences with special characters,
rather than type them anew.... ]

Hi James
Is it still the current thought that Dr Usui only added the the symbols to Reiki quite a few years after he started his clinic etc? and then for those who had trouble focusing on the energy?.

I have never really looked at them as translating to the word of a god, but more as tools to help get a job done.

Rob, heres a 'cut-n-paste' from a certain website (the URL of which I wouldn't dare mention, incase ye vigilant Keeper-of-the-Fire deletes this post!!)

The Reiki symbols (shirushi in Japanese) have been the source of great interest and much discussion over the years.

While it is a common belief, amongst western lineage Reiki practitioners, that Usui Sensei originally 'discovered' the four Reiki symbols in Buddhist texts ( - re-experiencing them and receiving understanding of their true significance in his visionary experience on Mt. Kurama); recently, some sources have claimed that initially, Usui Sensei did not use symbols in the Reiki system - that they were something he added at a later date, out of the need to incorporate an effective focussing method to assist those students who were experiencing difficulty in feeling the Reiki energy.

(In fact, the way that many people tell it, we might be forgiven for believing that one day Usui Sensei just plucked 4 symbols out of the air at random to use as the first 'Reiki add-ons' !)

However, in a recent discussion with a Reiki Master from Japan, we were talking about this issue of the introduction of the symbols, and the version of the story he shared, seems to put things in a slightly different perspective.

As we are all aware, ongoing research seems to continually reveal new information as to the history and nature of 'original' Reiki.

Current understanding is that originally (- rather than being a purely therapeutic modality,) Usui Sensei's system was essentially a spiritual-philosophical system (incorporating certain Buddhist and Shinto elements) - a system 'for the improvement of body and soul' - that is, a system primarily focussing on self-development, but one which also incorporated a self-healing element.
'Reiki' as it came to be understood in the West ( i.e. as essentially a purely therapeutic modality) would seem to be an 'outgrowth' of this spiritual-philosophical system.

According to the Reiki Master Jiro Kozuki, it was not so much a case of Usui Sensei introducing the symbols at a later date, but rather selecting four symbols which were already a feature of his spiritual-philosophical system, and assigning them new significance as 'keys' (or as NLP terminology puts it: 'Resource Anchors') to assist focus of intent as part of the evolving 'therapeutic modality' aspect of the system.

Hi James
Thank you for the infomation.
I can guess what website it is (LOL) but where on it would I find the whole article, or is that it ?

I like the NLP "Resource anchors" analogy, it certainly works for me.
