Today I met a gentleman in the store I had not seen for a while but whom I adore and have loved working with over the years. When I told him that I was now practicing Reiki you would have thought I pulled a gun!
He literally stopped the conversation and walked, very quickly about 10 feet away. He no longer wanted to talk to me. I was so stunned that I did not know what had happened. I asked him about work and he said a few words and walk away. I saw him twice more in the store and he completely ignored me.
For the first time I began to doubt myself and what I was doing until I finally reasoned out that it was not me but his issues that caused his reaction. I was so happy to see him, so proud to tell him that I was helping people to heal themselves and then to be completely shunned like that really threw me though.
I have found that some people are so terrified of healing, or scared of something they don't understand that they shut down like this. This man is very religious and may have contributed to his reaction as some people feel reiki is up there with devil worship.
I do not know if there is a way to mend this except time and prayer.
Love and light,
Tracey

Tracey,
I am sorry this happened to you. It can be devastating even when you don't care about the person! And I can imagine that if you really like this gentelman, it hurts so much worse! I know that when this has happened to me (only a couple of times), it was very painful, but like you, I came to realize it was not about me. There are people in my life that I love, but who totally cannot accept my decisions or beliefs. I continue to love them and know that they are just in a very different place....it is a lesson about continuing to love without judgement. After it happened to me, I became careful about how I revealed myself to people, but now I really don't care anymore because I am so much more confident that I am on the right path. If this gentleman is very "religious" and sees Reiki as "evil", there will be no "convincing" him otherwise. Don't doubt yourself, but know that as you become more truly yourself, there will be times like this on occasion. Have compassion for yourself and for him. Be gentle with both of your feelings.
Love,
Feather

Hi Tracey,
I also am sorry this happened to you but.......
'each to their own'..... had the man turned to you & said he was practicing 'satanism' what would 'you' have done? the very same I bet!
'we' are thrilled with our gift of learning & helping others & mother earth etc...but not all even 'understand' what the word 'Reiki' means...
leave him be, he also has 'choice'...& no matter how hard you try you won't change things with his feeling, nor would he chance your feelings on Reiki eh!!
just forget about him,... it hurts, but I find when you loose one, (before long you will find two!!)new friends.
he has made his 'choice' you have made yours, hey! go with your innerfeelings, you know your right,.......he also knows he's right......
just another learning 'curve', sad we have to learn the hard way sometimes!..but hey! I luv yer, Wendy ann xx

Tracey,
You have no need whatsoever to doubt yourself. The problem seems to me to lie with this chap.
I have encountered this sort of reaction among, shall we say, ultra-religious types.I make no criticism of their views and beliefs and,in many ways, I can understand them. I simply take the view that they are the ones who are losing out by not allowing themselves to be exposed to the energy. However, that it their choice and we must respect it.
So, don't worry about it, just keep on spreadin' the Word!!!!
Beannacht leat,
Brian

Dear Dakota,
Its not just Reiki, anything that one is involved with that terrifies another can prompt a similiar response. A few years ago I mentioned to a coworker (that I had utmost respect for & so enjoyed talking with) that I had taken a course in hypnosis. Her pupils got huge, she jumped back a foot & said dont look at me, youre trying to hypnotize me!! I thought she was joking but she really was afraid. I knew that she could be conservative & was religous but I had no idea until that day how rigid she was( this is a college educated intelligent woman and well traveled...not someone with a narrow range of personal experience). At first I was hurt that she believed I would force something on her but soon came to realize that it was a reflection of her fears or beliefs. The relationship was never the same.
Reiki has been a mixed bag for me as far as relationships. My brother told me that the symbols were satanic in origin and that Id fallen in with the wrong people. To a certain degree anything one believes that is not part of the generally accepted culture can have that effect on people. It wasnt too long ago that women could not vote, that blacks sat at the back of the bus and stomach ulcers were supposedly related to personality type ( now proven to be caused by a "germ"). What we dont know can be as powerful as what we do "know".
I dont think that rejection of Reiki is always about fear of healing. Reiki flies in the face of some accepted thinking and religous beliefs , there is literature out there that links it with cults & very impressionable people. The absence of scientific studies supporting the healing properties prevents widespread acceptance by the medical community. The kiss of death for some is simply that it is described by some as "New Age". I have come to dislike that expression!! :)
In a somewhat humorous vein, did you have any idea that you were that powerful!!! Just the mention of Reiki can make people disappear? Hmmm, wonder if that would work for an IRS audit????
peace & joy,
holobon

"Hmmm, wonder if that would work for an IRS audit????"
LOL, I don't know but it is worth a try!
I truly understand that what happened was part of his issues and I am OK with that. It was just so abrupt I was not expecting it.
On a different vein, i have put one more of us out there and attuned my Dad to Reiki 2 today. Go Dad!! (Thank you, Susan)
Love to all, and to all a good night, LOL

holobon,
Nope, I got audited a couple of years ago and those guys don't care if you are the devil himself they are on a 'mission'.
:-))
Haven't had any similar experiences that I am aware of. (you never know what someone is thinking so I can't say that no one has ever gotten out of the room as quickly as possible after finding out I do Reiki :-))
Until or unless they start coming up the road with torches in hand I am going to ignore them. :-) I'm sure they feel I am mislead as much as I feel they are. :-)
Personally I never use the words Reiki and 'new age' in the same sentence (ooops, just did, should never say never :-)) It really is the kiss of death.
Walk in beauty,
Rebecca

Dear Rebecca,
So....could Herr Frankenstein be a Reiki practitioner? He certainly used a lot of energy, I think his subject felt warm & tingly as the energy went through him & ALL his chakras were certainly opened & for sure the whole town came for him with torches a glow!!
peace & joy,

Wow,
Bless him and all his limiting fears.
I"ve come a long way in healing my feelings of fear when someone reacts to my healing works as something bad. It used to cause anger, which I knew was just a derrivative of fear.
Now I'm able to let it flow from me a bit more. What used to come up is my seeing their religion as something less than. Than I realized I'd become what I hated..lol..
I don't need to fix, adjust, or mend anyone who is in this mind set. The only thing I'd like to see if I had my druthers is that everyone truly accepted one another and really loved one another for the contributions they bring into the world.
That even means those harder to love.. Like those in Jail.. My little saying for that or anything I don't necessarily, But by the Grace of Spirit, there go I.. I"m just thankful I don't have to go through that type of fear to know myself anymore, I'm free of such needs.
Hope this is helpful. Know I love you and and remember your precious and perfect just like you are!
J
