I am new to this forum. I have not practiced Reiki for some time.
I was wondering if the health of the healer is a factor in practicing Reiki. If the healer has cancer, let's say, is that a factor for not practicing?
Thank you for your comments.

Agnes,
/*\ Namaste :-}}
- welcome back
- you are likely to get a variety of views on this one (somewhat akin to the permission issue I would say)
>;-}}
- for myself?? If I were unhealthy I would want to be very certain of my mindfulness during Reiki so as not to pass along any of my personal energy (a good idea at any time since Reiki is not about personal energy, but if one is sick the caveat is all the more important)
- cancer?? One of the special cases, I would offer. If it were me?? I probably would request a lot of Reiki for myself and be disinclined to do Reiki for others - there are some additional energy cleansing issues when dealing with cancer patients
>:-}}
- but, since I have not had so much as a cold in 15 years...........knock on wood!
>:-}}
- hope this helps

Namaste Agnes,
When I am sick I feel that I am not able to bring up as much energy as I normally do for myself or for others. This is just based on the sensations I normally associate with being the energy channel during a reiki session. I also feel that my chakras are not as strong during a sick period. This is just my experience.

Thanks to both of you for your insight.
I should have given more details. I have been treated for cancer. Currently, my tumor markers are normal and the CT scan does not show any active tumors.
So, the question is, does any sort of cancer rule out Reiki at any time? Or does remission/lack of active cancer signs mean one can do Reiki.
When do you consider the healer healed?
Thanks.

Dear Agnes,
One of the most powerful "healers" I know (She practices Chi Gong) is a person who used Chi Gong to heal herself of stage 4 breast cancer.

Dear Agnes,
Any healing modality that involves being close to another should include a decision not to treat if one has any contagious illness. With other ilnesses, perhaps the practitioner should be realistic in regard to their own energy and health. (We can look at a cut & decide if it is healed but most other health conditions are not so easy to evaluate) Lowered immunity suggests that one refrain from Reiki for one's own benefit & healing.
We tend to think of healing as something that is finite but it is often an ongoing process.
I am not aware of any reason not to Reiki others if one is a cancer survivor. Actually, people who are ill generally benefit from exposure to those who have dealt with a health crisis, it gives them hope.
I would be honored to have you Reiki me as Im sure others would.
peace & joy,
holobon

agnes,

- I am glad you are currently free of tumors and markers
- from dealing with cancer in my own family, one benchmark taken sort of as 'healed' is 5 years without any sign of cancer from the last treatment regimen
- does that mean the cancer will never return? Nope. We know that as well
- If you are in remission and show no tumors or markers then I would say Reiki would be fine - though I would do a bit of extra pre and post sessin cleansing when working with others (especially pre-cleansing of your energy bodies)
- hope this helps

Firekeeper,
Namaste :))
Could you please expand on why the extra cleansing is so important with cancer sufferers(as opposed to other conditions)? I remember that one should smudge throughly with cancer but have never known the exact reason why.

helen,

- different diseases seem to have somewhat different energy
- but, one of the primary factors is the responses people have to cancer (whether they are the 'patient' or whether it is a family member)
- there is often a good deal of anxiety and fear generated around the more serious diagnoses (cancer, MS, Lupus, etc, etc.)
- there is always, then, energy attached to such feelings and thoughts - energy we do not want to share with our clients (or really anyone else either)
- I always make sure to do a cleansing after energy work (reiki, attunements, K-K, etc) with someone with the diagnoses I mentioned (and some others as well) - to me it is simply good "energy hygiene", nothing more
- hope this helps

Firekeeper,
Namaste :))
Many thanks for clarifying, that is very helpful :)
I know that when I gave Reiki to my Mother-in-law the first time after she was diagnosed and before she had received any treatment, I was very nervous. She was the first cancer sufferer that I had worked on and somehow I wasn't quite sure what to expect. We used tibetan cymbols and incense before and after to cleanse our aura.
Thankfully she was recently given the all clear and just has to have regular check ups, which was very good news :)

- I am glad your MiL has been clear - always a joyful report
- also, depending on what I sense afterwards I find that a tub soak with sea salt added is very handy

Ah yes the wonderful hot sea salt tub.
I sometimes find it helpful to do that before a Reiki session too :)
