OK...not wishing to start the Reiki Permission arguments again....but I had such a VERY interesting thing happen last night....that I just have to share.
Last night, I was having MAJOR period pains and cramps, worst I've had in years, even causing an upset stomach and insomnia.
So I decided to do some self-Reiki on my lower belly, just to ease the discomfort, something I do all the time.
Wow! The pain suddenly increased 10-fold! It was unbearable. I tried to grit my teeth and take the pain, as I'm sure the Reiki would have been doing good anyway, in spite of the pain. But eventually I just gave up as it was just too much pain to take. The increased level of pain subsided as soon as I stopped the Reiki.
So here we have a case of Reiki doing more 'harm' than good. Probably not real harm, probably just speeding along the process and so shortening the pain time. But for me and my earthly body, I just couldn't take that level of pain.
Now imagine if someone was sending me the Reiki via distance, without me knowing.
I would have had all this increased pain, not understood it and NO CONTROL over stopping it.
And unless the person sending was a seriously talented psychic, they would not have known about my distress.
This example alone is the reason I believe so strongly in permission.

Hi Nats,
A great example to illustrate why sometimes it can definately not be in someone's best interest to receive Reiki.
Thanks for sharing.

Dear Natalie,
Thank you for sharing this with us. What a wonderful illustration of so many Reiki concepts that are often subject to heated debate! :-)
Of course you may be right that continuing self-Reiki last night would have shortened the time frame for experiencing the pain, by increasing it's intensity. But that was your call to make...your choice. Someone else might say that they knew it was best for you to experience the full effects of the pain and then have it go away quicker. Not their call...not their choice.
I hope you're feeling better today, Nats. Thank you again for the share...'twas a good one, indeed!

Dear Nats,
Just FYI: Based on experiences in a Reiki circle & personally, hands on Reiki seemed to dramatically increase stomach gurgling & gas for some. People who had just eaten were sometimes embarassed by stomach noises as soon as Reiki hands were placed above their abdomen. One of the things that may worsen menstrual cramps is distension of the colon by gas or bowel content. The uterus is generally more tender to touch during periods & extra pressure on it becomes noticeable. Actually, moving things along does help though it might be uncomfortable in the process. A heating pad & a warm drink sometimes soothes.

Hi Holobon,
Thanks for replying. I was wondering whether someone would have a physical explanation for what happened.
So the upset stomach, or more accurately, diarrhea makes sense then. If all those parts are putting pressure on each other and the body's immediate need is to reduce the pressure, emptying the bowel is probably the path of least resistance.
In this case, do you think hands-off in the aura or distance sending would have been more conducive to what I was trying to achieve, ie. soothe discomfort?

Dear Firekeeper,
In her original post Natalie said...
"So here we have a case of Reiki doing more 'harm' than good. Probably not real harm, probably just speeding along the process and so shortening the pain time."
In my reply I was agreeing that this could be a possibility. I have noticed that sometimes energy healing brings about an intensity of the symptoms experienced before they subside.
I experienced this on an occasion when I was receiving Reiki for a rather severe pain in my ankle. During the treatment the pain grew significantly worse before it subsided. Initially I thought as Natalie did...perhaps the energy going to that location was "speeding up the process". Then I began to wonder if it was me holding on to what was causing the pain in the first place, albeit subconsciously. My inability to let go of an emotional issue that had manifested as physical pain.
Thank you for asking the question. It helped me to solidfy some of my thoughts on the matter. :-)

Dear Nats,
Personal experience: start with hands off Reiki on the abd and see how it goes from there, usually I have been able to progress to hands on.
The experience of pain differs so much from one person to another. Only once have I experienced pain worsening with Reiki & it did get very uncomfortable but it may have been the position I was in on the table that was making matters worse for my hip.

Dear Firekeeper,
It is, perhaps, not the pain and suffering that is being held on to, but the cause for the pain and suffering. Our desires/needs being the root cause so often. Getting to that source and doing the self-work necessary to release these attachments we create based on our own desires for certain outcomes...that's where the fun starts!

Hi Holobon,
Thanks :-)
Thinking back, there has been 2 other occasions where I have experienced pain with Reiki.
The first was when I broke my wrist. During my 8 hour hospital ordeal, waiting for it to be seen to, I decided to try Reiki to ease my emotional state. So first I tried hands-on on the actual wrist. That just amplified the pain and immediately thoughts of bones setting in the wrong position flooded my mind. So I moved my good hand to my heart. That helped calm me down and there was no increased pain in the broken wrist.
The second was during a Reiki Share. One of the masters decided to work on me and whilst everyone else was following the traditional hand positions, he went straight to where my pancreas is. And immediately I felt a burning, stabbing pain there. I stayed with that one, as I knew he knew what he was doing. And that next day I was going for a glucose test, so I figured my pancreas could use all the help it could get. The pain did ease after a while. And my result the next day was negative, even though my previous result was positive for Impaired Glucose Tolerance. Difficult to tell if it was the Reiki that caused the good result, because there was a good 2 year gap between the 2 tests. But food for thought, nonetheless.
Maybe my body just works like that. In an area of trauma/injury/weakness, Reiki has been know to bring pain to me.

Dear All
Experience dictates that you never apply Reiki to a painfull area for more than a few seconds at a time and even this should only be done with extreme care.
The hand position shold not be closer than say 50mm from the infected area.
If the treatment is being carried out correctly a ray of light energy is radiating directly from the palm or finger tips.
If you trace the hand movements over the effected part of the body with a thermal imaging camera, every time you pass over the infected area, or injury, or pain radiating area the you will see a red blotch appear in the veiwing monitor, showing an increase level of activity within the area affected.
This situation sometimes gives rise to increased levels of pain as the Reiki energy becomes irritating for the condition to say the least.
Should it be that it is necessary to treat the area concerned it should only be done by passing the hand very briefly over the area just a few times at a distance already stated.
When treating animals I stay well away from painfull areas and let the Reiki energy build up the immune system to deal with the complaint in a more natural and gentle manner.
I can say this method always works as I have applied it on several occasions.

Dear Lesley,
Hmmm...reading this reminds me of something I read years ago in a book by a therapist, something about all mental illness ultimately being caused by the desire to escape pain. We tend to think of pain as only physical but the mental "pain" we experience may actually be worse. Just because we cant see a mental injury (one recognizes a broken leg right away, eh?) doesnt mean it isnt there or it isnt significant. It may be hidden under many layers or simply disguised.
Much to consider in this thread and again, something hits me tween the eyes here when it needs to!
Namaste.

Hi Natalie
Many thanks for the post hope it was not to blunt,I administer Reiki to the horses on a free will basis as they are never tied up during a Reiki session, so the bite and the boot syndrome tends to focus your your mind and actions, as to were you place your hands when giving Reiki.
I am sure the same energy principals apply to humans the only difference they can converse when pain increases.
