Hand positions on the back

During my sessions I have come to not use the hand positions on the back. This is for two reasons, If Reiki goes anywhere and through things I cant see the point because surely it will go through to the back?? Also, the clients are so relaxed laying on their back and it disturbs them to turn them over so close to the end of the session.
How do others feel about this and does anyone else do the same?
I took my Masters on Good Friday and will pass the original method onto my students so that they can make their own choices and develop their own way.

Otoharo!

I never change anything about reiki. There are more people who feel less vulnerable with hands on the back than otherwise, I have found. Hands on back, please!

- so, how about the ones who prefer to lie in the prone position? Do you skip doing the frontal hand positions because you think the energy will automatically go to the front positions (which it will not, of course)??

- why not ask the clients what they want - or let them know before starting that there is a prone and supine series of hand positions?

- then, if someone only wants one side or the other he\she can say so

- but, be ready for some to change their minds mid-stream

Allycat,

Another possibility would be to start off the session with the hand positions for the back. It may not be as intrusive to the client since the transition to the front would occur earlier in the session, and it would end the session in a more comfortable position (for those who are more comfortable on their backs, that is).

For myself I have practiced front only , front/back and just resting hands on myself.

I have found in the end that using front and back as per proper technique gives the best results. Others may have experienced something different.

That being said , most of the time i only get to lay my hands on myself and just let the reiki flow. But that's a time thing and a lack of effort on my part to make the time. I vote some Reiki is better than none but were I to offer Reiki professionally or offer someone the experience of a Reiki treatment I would do a full proper treatment as best as I know how.

When i teach I will teach the most traditional ways i know of. I feel as a teacher it is my duty to pass on this art in the truest form to the best of my abilities. Not share my cheat sheet so to speak. Or to teach MY personal universal and Reiki views. I am passing on a pre-existing method. If folks want to experiemnt then they are free to do so.

Now the reason i came to the conclusion that front and back is best is because I had a huge blockage in my third eye. I could never seem to get the area clear. This went on for like a year or so if i remember correctly. I could rest my hands in the third eye position or something more comfortable over the same area for an hour and not feel it completed. I couldn't understand this because i was used to having the same effect no matter how i did it as long as long as i put enough time into it. I decided to go back to doing a full treatment with all the positions to see if there was a difference since i had more experience and had been working with the energy almost daily. And to my surprise once I had hit the position on the back of the heaad i noticed it was still gooky to me even though i used reiki for various lengths of time almost every day. As soon as i got that spot cleared which was actually rather quickly i intuitively felt guided back to my third eye and found that the area cleared up no sweat.

Now if i feel the third eye is being bothersome again i can do the same little trick and find that it always helps.

The energy system can have blockages all through it that prevent the energy from flowing properly. We all know this as Reiki practitioners it's part of what we seek to eliminate to the best of our ability during treatments. To unclog the pipes and remove or transmute the less pure energies in the body. So what i gathered from my experience was that this theory on Reiki flowing where it wasx needed was for my person..bullshit. I had very clearly experienced otherwise. Though many will swear that just laying on hands is enough and that the positions are an unneccessary complication or something that can be outgrown. For me at least i know this simply isn't the case ( and for the record noone has to agreee).

My view is that when we use the hand positions we are going to all those areas of the energy system that may be blocked/congested. We are sure to get the Reiki everywhere. those blocks now have energy moving from both sides of them which i assume ( though i can't speak factually other than my anecdotal evidence) will then move in on these blockages from both sides helping to elimnate them faster.

Many have also experienced when we send Reiki directly to a block this helps eliminate the block quicker for obvious reasons.

That isn't to say the same thing can't be accomplished by only doing one side or the other. But in my experience this can take drastically longer to improve the condition of my body's energy systems.

Dear Allycat,
A full treatment is the best option for healing. The relaxation part of Reiki can be "addictive". It is easy to focus on that especially as the client "knows" that you did something for them if they relax enough to go into sleep or an altered state. That is not necessarily indicative of a complete Reiki treatment. Many promote quiet during treatment to highten relaxation & it certainly does work & feels great. But Reiki is more than surface relaxation.
Many practitioners never do the back, its not unusual in some circles. Its not about the energy reaching the back from the front positions. If that was it, why not just do the crown & let it filter down to all the chakras?
If it is a worthwhile endeavor then it is worthwhile to do a complete treatment whenever possible. The key is what the client can handle, there are medical problems & disabilities that may prevent treating certain areas. So we get as close as we can to all the hand positions back & front & do what we can.
Half a treatment is better than none. But that should be the exception not the rule. IMHO, anyway. :)
P.S. When you have received Reiki from people whose mind was elsewhere, did slipshod work, etc. and compare that to a full treatment, you realize that sticking to the basics has benefits.

peace & joy,
holobon

To all you lovely people who responded to this thread
Thank you for your thoughts and ideas. It has given me a lot to consider and I think I may be converted to doing the hand positions on the back.
I knew you would be able to help me.

Funny that you mention the head thing.

As Usui worked within the understanding of meridians not chakras , it has been said ( who knows if accurate or not) that he used to treat using the head alone ( remember Hayashi introduced the hand positions). The understanding is that the five main meridian lines ( or maybe only five lines i dunno don't use that system myself).t i've been known to do far too much of that.

conflagration,

/*\ Namaste :-}}

- there are those who feel that the hand positions attributed to Usui Sensei more closely follow the chakra locations than the myriad of meridians - although for myself I find no 1:1 correlation to either system

At Breitenbush, when Ms. Furumoto was fielding questions from the group, someone asked about chakras. Her response was that information about the chakras come from China, not Japan.
