Back positions, more info?

dear Friends,
I just read the thread on hand postions for the back. Perhaps you all can shed a bit more light for me.

I have been to many practitioners and was taught by three different masters. Never have I had anyone put their hands on my back nor was I ever taught this.

I have put hands on the back when I have been pulled to do so but I have never done all hand positions. I have seen wondrous things happen in session with just front treatment. Perhaps I am missing something more.

Could you explain a bit further if there are special hand positions and also why (forgive my ignorance here)if reiki can travel to all places of the earth why can it not go thru the body and also why the back is not treated with the intention of the energy going there?

Thank you for clearing this all up for me. Great thread Ally Cat!

Otoharo!

My information comes from Ms. Furumoto. And from my own experience I feel less vulnerable with someone's hands on my back. Others seem to feel this also. Eveyone in this area use the hand positions on the back. For me anyway, the front positions alone do not do it.

Tracey,

- if one does not 'think' to treat the back then one might also conclude there is not the intention to do so - hence the energy may not get there

- I was taught back positions by one of Furumoto Sensei's Masters

Hi Dakota,
Thank you & Allycat for your questions as I have had to reflect on the importance of back positions & why they are like Rodney Dangerfield and "get no respect". :)
In my first class we were taught the back positions & told it was important to do them, even with self treatment ( getting as close as possible & within reason since many of us arent that flexible). I found a RM closer to home however & under her direction the back positions were not done routinely. ( I just checked the manual from that class & the back positions are included) The group I joined did not focus on the back either. I lost touch with the practice until some of us finally started doing back & front. ( So, all of us taught by the second master were delinquent in routinely utilizing the back positions). It is not surprising that you encountered 3 masters that never stressed them. My guess would be that the back positions were eliminated in Reiki shares, over time, simply due to the time factor. If you have a limited amount of time available to get everyone on a table it may have been phased out gradually without anyone even realizing what was being lost. (It is easier for many people to lie on their back than their front and this may have been a factor as well)
There are energy pathways or meridians on the back ( kidney & bladder for example). Working the spots that eliminate waste from the body is important when dealing with disease, illness, etc. What goes in must come out! I remember being told, in my first class, that the bladder & kidneys were key to improving health issues. Detoxifying self after attunement or with self treatment is important.
The basic Reiki treatment is the ideal. There are times we can not provide that & then we do what we can. IMHO, we have lost touch with the whole concept of promoting balance when we routinely do that. But if we were taught that the back is not that important......

peace & joy,
holobon

Holobon, when I participate in shares, I make sure my back gets done by lying that way to start with! Boy how wonderful all those hands on the back!

Thank you for all the food for thought. I checked all my manuals and none have the back positions. I am just getting into the meridians due to massage therapy school so that thinking makes a tons of sense now that I think about it. I will look up more on this thru the web. Thank you again. Lovin' the learnin'!

Hi everyone.
This is why I love this site....how many of us in school had that thing where we wondered about a subject that was being taught but were not confident enough to ask?? Good to see the bigger picture. I think there is a danger of the treatments becoming too diluted but still agree with the comment of if Reiki can travel distances why not through the body? I suppose there is no resolution to that answer.
Love and light to you all
Ally

ally,

Hi.

Sure Reiki travels through the body. It 'generally' goes where it is intended by the recipient. If the recipient is low on mindfulness and intention for the energy then the results will likely be somewhat wanting. And, even when recipient is higher in mindfuilness and intention the results are not, as we well know, always what we wish for.

Thus if, for example, I do reiki for myself to ease a painful shoulder and I get little or no relief I might conclude that the energy went somewhere else, perhaps as some might say, for my 'highest good'. :) Yet, if I do not detect the effects of the energy "elsewhere" then I might also conclude I am not nearly as in touch with my so-called "higher self" as I might wish to imagine.

LOL

By the same token, if the energy helps my painful shoulder then I could insist, spuriously of course, that the relief to my shoulder was at that time for my 'highest good'.

:)

Cheers,

RC

There is also the school of thought that when one does distance work they are not sending the energy anywhere but actually facilitating the connection between the energy and the recipient.

The funny thing about trying to rectify one understanding with another is that we have to accept that one or both understandings are flawed or wrong. Or factors we are not aware of.

Do we know Reiki flows easily through all things? Do we know that there is not some direct connection. Or that the theory i stated above isn't the real case in which case Reiki isn't being sent anywhere thus invalidating the theory.

That's why I listen to what folks say but accept fully what experience shows me. I have ideas and thoughts and what I call the temporary understandings. But i've experienced more than a few temporary understandings that have been off base. And yet have had others validated beyond expectations.

When we say Reiki can or cannot do anything we are being firm in mind of it's attributes. Except we can wrongly interpret any experience. And there is always the possibility that we have no actual clue how energy works at all and we're like a cave man trying to understand nuclear physics.

In truth we know nothing. But always cling to this nothing. Anmd i think to some degree that's pretty much every human on the planet. It's just a matter of how much.

Tracey, at the Northwest Reiki Gathering at Breitenbush, Or., a number of Takata's students are always present. There is Phyllis Furumoto, Paul Mitchell from Coiur d'Alene, Idaho. Wanya Twan came one year. We always have a treat from having hand positions reviewed.

I have located a small book oragnized by Paul and Phyllis from Mrs. Takata's early Diary:

In my attempt to write this essay on the Art of Healing in limited worlds, I will try to be practical rather than technical, because what I am about to define is not associated with any material being which is visible, nor has a shape, nor name.

I believe there exists One Supreme Being--the Absolute Infinite--a Dynamic Force that governs the world and universe. It is an unseen spiritual power that vibrates and all other powers fade into insignificance beside it. So, therefore, it is Absolute!

This power is unfathomable, immeasurable, and being a universal life force, it is incomprehensible to man. Yet, every single living being is receiving its blessings daily, awake or asleep.

Different teachers and masters call Him the great Spirit, the Universal Life Force; Life Energy, because when applied it vitalizes the whole system; Ether Wave bacause it soothes pain and puts you into deep slumber as if under an anesthetic, and The Cosmic Wave because it radiates vibrations of exultant feeling and lifts you into harmony.

I shall call it "reiki" because I studied under that expression. Reiki is a radionic wave like radio. It could be applied locally or as in short wave. A distant treatment could be successfully given.

Reiki is not electricity, nor radium or Xray. It could penetrate thin layers of silk, linen, procelain, or lead, wood or steel, because it comes from the Great Spirit, the Infinite.

It does not destroy delicate tissues or nerves. It is absolutely harmless, therefore, it is a practical and safe treatment. Because it is a universal wave, everything that has life benefits when treated-plant life, fowls, the animals, as well as human beings, infants or old, poor or rich.

It should be applied and used daily as a prevention. God gave us this body a place to dwell, and our daily bread. We were put into this world for some purpose, therefore, we should have health and happiness.

It was God's plan so he provides us with everything. He gave us hands to use them to apply and heal, to retain physical health and mental balance, to free ourselves from ignorance, and live in an enlightened world, to live in harmony with yourself and others, to love all beings.

When these rules are applied daily, the body shall respond and all we wish and desire to attain in this world is within our reach. Health, happiness and the road to longevity, which we all seek--I call this Perfection.

Being a universal force from the Great Divine Spirit, it belongs to all who seek and desire to learn the art of healing.

It knows no color, nor creed, old or young. It will find its way when the student is ready to accept. He is shown the way. Initiation is a sacred ceremony and the contact is made. Because we are associating with Divine Spirit, there is no error nor should we doubt. It is Absolute.!

With the first contact or initiation, the hands radiate vibrations when applied to the ailing part. It relieves pain, stops the blood from an open wound; your hands are ready to heal acute and chronic diseases - the human beings - the fouls - the animals.

In acute cases, only a few minutes' application is necessary. In the chronic cases, the first step is to find the cause and effect.

It is not necessary to undress the patient completely, but it is better to loosen all tight clothing so that the patient may relax, lying on the table face up. Most important is to find the cause of the illness.

Start treatment from the eyes, sinus, pituitary glands, ears, throat, thyroid, thymus, stomach, gall bladder, liver, pancreas, solar plexus, ileocecum, colon, sigmoid flexure, ovarian glands, bladder, then front chest and heart.

Turn the patient over, treat the back, lungs, sympathetic nerves, kidneys, spleen, and prostate gland.

During the treatment, trust in your hands. listen to vaibrations or reaction. If there is pain, it registers pain in your finger tips and palm. If the patient has itch, it reacts the same; if deep and chronic, it throbs a deep pain, or if acute, the pain is a shallow tingle.

As soon as the body responds to the treatment, the acute ailment disappears but the cause remains. Dig into the cause daily and with each treament, improvement is seen.

After the organs have been thus treated, I finish the treament with a nerve stroke which adjusts the circulation. Apply on the skin a few drops of sesame oil or any pure vegetable oil.

I place my thunb and forefinger on the left side of the spinal column and the three fingers and palm flat on the right side of the spinal column. With a downward stroke, 10 to 15 strokes to the end of spinal cord. Only in disbetis cases are the strokes reversed; arms and legs are manipulated towards the heart.

The above treamenet is called the foundation and it requires an hour or more, all depending on the complications and seriouness of the case.

Going through the body in nimute detail, the hands become sensative and are able to determine the cause and to detect the slightest congestion within, whther physical or mental, acute or chronic; Being strictly drugless and a bloodless treatment, Reiki will adjust the body to normal.

In about four days to three weeks, we find a great change taking place within the body, all internal organs and glands will begin to function with much vigor and rhythm.

The digestive juices put out normal flow, the congested nerves slacken, the adhesions break away, the lazy colon gets organized, the fecal matter drops from the walls of the intestines, the gases eliminate.

Many years of accumulated toxin finds its way out through the pores. It is a sticky perspiration.

The bowels increase, dark adn strong in odor. The urine increases like dark tea, sometimes white as if flour stirred in water. It lasts four to six days, and yet I have had patients who reacted with only one treatment.

When this is established, you are assured of a big general overhaul of the intestinal organs taking place. With such good cleansing, the body becomes active. The numbed nerves regain sense of feeling, appetite increases, sound sleep becomes natural, eyes sparkle, skin glows like silk.

With new blood and good circulation , nerves and glands restored, it is possible to rejuvenate five to ten years. At this time, it is very important what you consume.

In the Reiki health treaments, we are vegetarians, and all kinds of fruits in season.

Nature provides with plenty, but never to waste. Over-eating is a sin. Eating in moderation, with a feeling of gratitude, to recognize the Great Spirit who is the creator, who is the All Power to make things grow and blossom and bear fruit.

Come to the table with pleasant thoughts. Never eat when you are worried. Milk, white sugar, and starches are to be avoided when the patient has a weak stomach. With proper food, the patient responds faster to the treaments.

Taken from the book Reiki, a memeorial to Takata Sensei, compiled by Mrs. Alice Takata Furumoto, 1982, from Hawayo Takata's early diary.
