Wow---thank you all for your insight.
I have been taught many time over the years to never put anyone on a pedestal, to never elevate a person to godly status. And as many times as I've been taught, I never seem to learn. Then when a person proves themselves to be human, I end up jaded and disappointed.
So maybe a big part of the problem IS that I elevated him to superhuman status because he is a Master and my elder. Yet somehow, knowing that he really is human is helping me to be more comfortable around him. I gave him a lot of power; now I don't have to, 'cause he's just a person like the rest of us. Kinda levels the playing field.

Lesson learned.

I wish I could address some of the great points that were made in every post here. There was something for me to learn in every one.

Blessings and gratitude to you all.

Dear Coyotesong,
Your post & all the responses point at the relevance of this subject! Thank you for sharing it with us. Im finding several threads of thought have evolved from your post.

Do not be too hard on yourself! Our culture is a major influence of non realistic expectations. Talented people are found all over the world in all kinds of circumstances so why the use of the term "idol" in American Idols? The unspoken thinking is that there is no glamour in average or non celebrity. We are prompted from an early age to stand out from the crowd & be special. Performance testing can send that message to children in grade school! Why would it be unusual for a person to want to be special or be associated with someone else who is "special"?

Wish I could remember who said that a spiritual person wants anonymity, to blend rather than stick out...notoriety and popularity are distractions from personal spiritual growth. I doubt THAT philosophy will catch the attention of the masses! ( unless it is to be the best guru of whatever spiritual fad is "in" at the moment :)

Much has popped on my mind's screen in response to your initial post. That is a very good thing!

Again, thank you.

peace & joy,
holobon

Dear Coyote,
I can understand your confusion about this situation and hope that you may be able at the right time when the situation or conversation presents itself to bring up his comment and how it made you feel to at least talk about it to him in the presence of others who are supportive of you to educate him as we are all each others teachers
