dear friends,
i've always felt that the phrase 'reiki can do no harm' was naive. now, i'm conviced that it is.
during my ongoing recovery from tendonitis, my natural reaction was yo give myself reiki. what i found it did was to cause the muscles around the tendon to spasm very painfully.
i suppose if i could seperate out the tendon and give reiki to just it, iwould have been fine. but that, alas, is not possible.
so if anyone tells you 'reiki can do no harm', take it with proper judgement.
blessings,
roxy

Hi Roxy,
Had hip pain several years ago which worsened during Reiki to the point I was almost in tears. It was a good experience to have because I can certainly relate to others whos feel worse with Reiki. It only happened once but that was enough to get my attention! :)
Was just reading a book that recounted a heart disease patient's discussion with his doctor & all the symptoms that he had for a long time & chose to ignore. The doctor related the symptoms to what was going on with him in several aspects of his life. But it took a while for the patient to see that his physical symptoms related to what was going on inside him. So, now I read your post & thinking about my own life & health, Im wondering if one of the things we humans have forgotten to do is recognize the communication from our bodies. Before there were docs on every corner, did we respect our body more? Maybe its not just about fixing it, maybe its about listening to the pain?
Sometimes the hardest thing to do is nothing, eh?
peace & joy,
holobon

Ms. Roxanne,
/*\ Namaste :-}}
- it is said that mindfulness and intention will be able to isolate that tendon
>:-}}
- your description also suggests some difficulties with the olde saw: Reiki knows where to go - it goes where it is needed
>:-}}
- unless, of course, in the instance you describe, the effects of the Reiki on the muscles was pointing out that you were, perhaps, being lacsadaisical in your mindfulness of the tendon?? - Nah!!
- (remember, too, that the tendons do not act in a vacuum -they are attached to other anatomic structures)
- then of, course, there are the mind-body-spirit connections

HI, I have been working on my mother in law who has stomach cancer and back pain. She has Reiki at home and was here for 2 weeks and had treatment each day, yes she felt pain during the treatment, and was washed out after wards BUT at her insistence we kept going, and by the end of 2 weeks no pain and huge progress, Maybe you have to go through the pain?? Healing wounds can be painful is this just a magnification of that? It is worthy of investigation as there really does seem to be a pattern.

Well for once i get to go over to the nuttier side of the fence. : )
I have some areas of my body ( joints and lower right leg specifically) where I always feel resistance to the energy. Usually when I start I just feel the resistance in those areas, but as I go on i feel more of a physical discomfort/pain. It usually gets worse as I continue the treatment but by the time I am finished or almost as quickly as I stop the pain alleviates. Only to start up again next treatment.
I believe this is one of those times where Reiki is causing what we deem an unpleasent experience, even though it is doing right. I feel that the area being damaged and needing Reiki is well obviously resistant to the flow of the energy.so one may experience discomfort. Kind of like how you can recieve Reiki for a cold and have the illness seem to increase but then get over it at an increased rate.
I would say to keep going unless it is unbearable.

Perhaps distance Reiki would be more helpful. I've recently read an excellent book called Animal Reiki (brand new, available at amazon) in which the authors repeatedly say that animals often prefer distance Reiki or simply hands-off (but nearby) to hands-on, as if it is too strong. Something to think about.
Cheers,
Margarat

Maybe the increased pain is Reiki's way of telling you that whatever is wrong with your elbow is beyond its ability to heal?
When I had hip pain and foot pain, Reiki didn't help it much. I think it was because the damage was too great and I needed surgery. Part of the "healing" as my need to accept that I needed surgery.

In this case and in others, people have pointed out how Reiki can sometimes cause pain. I have noticed this too, once with a fresh injury. But is pain the same as harm?
I think this is a fruitful area to explore. Can pain be an indicator of healing -- under what circumstances does that arise?
Especially with new clients, I tell them that if sensations are too intense, they can ask to go slower and the energy will respond accordingly. Don't know if that would have helped for Roxy's case, you gotta be there at the time!
Blessings,
Aronaya

Hello again Roxy,
When I first came to Reiki, I was taught that the energy can accelerate the natural progression of the illness or injury. So, if the natural end product of such an illness or injury is detrimental to the host, then in that sense, it could be argued that Reiki is doing harm.
In your case, it seems that the intensity of pain you are experiencing could be linked to the speed at which your injury is being affected by the energy. The healing process can produce pain and an increase in the speed of healing could very well produce an increase in the level of pain.
Hope this helps.
Slan go foille agus beannacht leat

Hmm, I read a book on this spiritual healer who said that when he was giving healing to a certain individual, the said person began to come out in sweats an had a rough time, But I think he asked his helpers why this was so, and I think he were told that the energy was to-strong. Then I think he asked that the healing energy lessen or something. The client began to improve.
Maybe it's a matter of fine-tuning, making an adjustment, turning down the thermostat, etc., etc.,
Imagine blowing out a candle, and you blow so hard, that not only the flame goes out, but the melted wax is blown everywhere. Now imagine that someone is on the recieving end and gets melted wax in the eye.
Narrow the focus, less force, Be gentle to yourself.
