Reiki in hospitals

Hello Everyone,

Namaste...

I have an incredible opportunity to introduce reiki to our local (small town) hospital.

:-)

I need to submit a summary of what other hospitals are doing to incorporate reiki into their patient care.

If anyone is intimately involved with hospital work...or better yet has helped introduce reiki into a hospital (having followed all that paperwork "stuff") could you contact me at my listed email address? I have a lot of questions!

In particular, I'm hoping to hear from someone in the PA or MD area but not necessary.

This is a really special opportunity for these patients so I want to do the best job that I can to educate and show a real vision for this type of work.

Also, for those of you who do or have done reiki on a regular basis in a hospital (around a hospital bed) do you have any pointers/suggestions for a practitioner to work in a comfortable position...considering at least a 45 min. session.

I'm so grateful already for any and all feedback.

Abundant blessings to you all...
...and happy fall (a wee bit early)!

Otoharo!

I am happy for you. I once had a client in the hospital. It was a bit awkward with all the tubes, etc. We were interrupted often by nurses doing their duty, and looking askance at us. When I was in the way, I moved down to the feet and kept the energy going that way. It still was helpful to the client.

Our local hospital has a Reiki department. Before the granddaughters, I worked at the hospital as a Reiki volunteer.

It is very important to have all your paperwork in order. Here in MI, the hospital requires us to take volunteer training and attend all the inservices required of employees. Our department has to pass state inspection.

I will send you a copy of the flyer the hospital gives to all patients. There is contact info on it too. Rev. Midge Miller worked hard to get the program up and running. I am certain she will be glad to offer advice.

Dear Blackearth,
That is a miracle to be sure. Where do you live? There is some nurses that do Reiki at one of the hospitals where I live however, I doubt they get paid anything.

I live in rural northern Michigan. A rather backwoods kind of area. Yet, we have Reiki in our hospital!

We do not get paid. Maybe that is in the future. We have the same responsiblities as any other department that works on patients. Even including charting in patient charts. This has been one of our most powerful ways to convince the skeptics. Seeing the rapid pain relief and recovery of patients that have documented Reiki sessions has done much for Reiki's credibility.

Namaste Everyone,

Thank you all so much for your responses. They have been very helpful and also encouraging.

Wouldn't it be awesome if all that documented info on the effects of reiki in patient care could be networked. It would be awfully hard to be a skeptic with all that evidence.

And to think of all the time invested by countless reiki practitioners to help patients in their time of need for no $$$$ says something about belief in reiki's benefits and committment to the care of others.

To have such committment and attention to care will one day bring enough respect that it will be unthinkable not to compensate in some manner...

...I have a dream today.

:-)

Blessings to all and keep the info coming!

Actually, National Institutes of Health has commissioned 6 double blind studies on Reiki for specific conditions. Hartford Hospital in CT has done pretty solid studies as well. Haven't heard yet of anyone doing a survey of completed studies, but there are institutions out there actively following the trail. It's a good time for Reiki folks, as the medical community is starting to take notice enough so that we can say it out loud when we talk to groups about Reiki -- this hospital uses it, that hospital uses it, EMTs use it, etc. There's even a Reiki Master dentist in Toronto.

Also, the NIH research hospital, Warren Magnuson, which I believe is in Maryland, has been written about as using Reiki in the pain and palliative care section.

Sounds like you already have more than enough to go on!

Aronaya,

Namaste...

On the contrary, your info on the NIH Clinical Center brings it close to home...literally. Baltimore is only an hour from my home town. This is very useful.

I would love to get copies of what was written about their use of reiki. I'll do some surfing, but if anyone finds anything, I'd be oh so grateful if you could forward it to me!

I must say I'm quite tempted to see if I could visit the Center...what an awesome field trip that would be.

Thanks again!
Abundant blessings,
Mammabear

Mammabear,
How exciting for you! My suggestion is to try contacting the website for Reiki News magazine. In a couple of past issues there have been excellent articles written by someone who set up reiki in a hospital in the US. I recall it was quite detailed and set out protocols etc. You can easily order back copies of the magazine from the website.

Eaglestar,

Namaste...

So nice to hear from you. :-)

I do subscribe to this magazine already and have read some of the articles you are probably referring to. I've also checked out the website and found lots of good info there too. Thus far, it's the most comprehensive that I've found on the subject of getting reiki into hospitals.

It will take a while to get things really moving I suspect, but at least no one has shut us down yet...and that's something, right? LOL

I have also been permitted to give some reiki demonstrations at a depression support group which is opening up some doors as well.

This along with newly formed community healing nights at two nearby towns has been keeping me busy and loving my work with reiki. It's a joy to give people some new options in their journey to heal.

Love and Light,
Abundant Blessings,
Mammabear
