Question?

I have a question here. I have just found out that one has to be a licensed massage therapist here in Florida to be able to practice Reiki and receive money for it. I have to ask then why is it so expensive (in my opinion) to take the classes and receive attunement when one cannot practice legally? The fees at the center I was considering attending for a class is $250 for Reiki 1 and $500 for Reiki 2. Is it just me or do any of you think this is unfair? If we are expected to share the Reiki for free, then shouldn't the attunement be free also? It boggles me.

bjay,

/*\ Namaste :-}}

- there are states where one does not need another license such as massage, PT, etc.

- some would say this opens the opportunity for people whose only Reiki credentials are distance attunements to offer themselves as Reiki Masters - a situation I do not support at all

- as for offering Reiki for free?? Where did you hear that??

- there is nothing amisss with setting fees for Reiki (as long as one has the training and experience)

- so, in places where licensing is not required (or some proof of Reiki training) people are left to live their ethics (and their Karma), aren't they

Otoharo!

If this were me I would find a way to take this matter to the top . The real issue is that reiki is not massage. Perhaps the massage people were the ones who backed this issue to prevent reiki in just that way. Go to the legislature and see what you can stir up.

Thank you for your responses, it seems that The Attorney General has indicated that in order to legally practice reiki in Florida you must have a massage license. The Florida Health Freedom Coalition is working hard to pass legislation exempting reiki from this requirement. We shall see what happens.

I have been told by a Reiki master that for one to practice reiki without a massage therapy license the only way is to become a Reiki Master and then hold your own Reiki circle and suggest "love donations", other than that you cannot ask money for the therapy. At one time one could become an ordained minister and practice but that has been ruled out now. Those that did this in the past were grand-fathered in and still practice under that title.

- as I said, as far as I know there are only a handful of states with the sorts of licensing rules you have in Florida

- I do, of course, recommend practicing in such a way as not to violate the laws of your state

- any law suit that might be brought against you by a client (as unlikely as that might be) would likely have added strength were the Practitioner to be shown to be in violation of state laws concering the practice of Reiki

- so, how you deal with the situation is, of course, up to you

I would never violate the state laws, I prefer not to go to jail! So far I am just reading and learning and attending reiki circles. I am holding off on spending any money on classes for now.

I do feel for you and the situation in Florida. I watched things unfold via a website and it got really nasty. It seemed that one reason for the move to licence was to enable therapists in other modalities to add reiki for additional education credits. The person who helped get reiki licenced in Florida was a reiki master. Makes my blood boil and I agree that in no way is reiki massage. Having said that, because of the huge variety of ways people are taught, some massage-type things have been added. I myself sought a reiki treatment at a resort I was staying at. The person who gave the treatment was very competent, but at the end, when I was in a totally blissed out state and drifted off somewhere she suddenly massaged my legs vigorously to 'get the energy flowing'. Scared the *!*! out of me and ruined the moment so to speak. So, you see, it is not impossible to imagine how some would reach the conclusion that massage is a component of reiki. I know not what the answer is, but I wish you joy in your practice of reiki. I am watching vigilantly to see if they start to think about the same legislation here in Canada!

Well, as sure as eggs is eggs, if Authority can find a way to extract more money from its citizens, it most certainly will.

Always with the best possible intentions of protecting the Public, of course!!

A Brian, a chara,

- yep, more taxes for more corruption and less services (our Katrina victims being a prime example)

- your eggs appear to be sans bacon, sausage, black pudding, mushrooms, tomatoes, and toast

- we could call it an empty English breakfast (except for the eggs, of course)

A Peadar, a chara,

Never a truer word!!

Still, even if Emperor Tony's successor doesn't leave me much, we can always open a can of Spam for your first brekkie here!!

Bagl.

Or, as a special treat, could take you to a butty wagon I know. The the old guys who run it make the best bacon and egg butties in Lancashire. And you get a good bit of craic thrown in for good measure!!

Then we can retire to my porch with a jug o' corn, chew the fat, shoot some breeze and let things digest a while.

Bagl, bagl, bagl.

Nos da, oiche mhaith (my time)
