do these really work?

HI all;

I am new to this board and hope that those of you that are reiki practicioners/masters/teachers can give me accurate information on this. I received 2 reiki treatments last week for pain associated to pleursy, the first on a Tuesday evening, after the treatment I could take deep breaths with no pain. Wed. no pain. Thursday I started having pain with breathing again but I believe this was related to emotional issues(ran over our family cat of 12 years by accident) received another reiki treatment Thurs. evening which took away the breathing pain and also helped to relieve a lot of the emotional stress from the day. Both treatments I felt immediate warmth not only where the practicioner placed his hands but also coming from within as well as a tingling throughout the areas where his hands were placed. The warmth lasted for several hours sort of like warm blanket being wrapped around me but on the inside. The first treatment I requested, but the second I did not, the practicioner knew I was still feeling bad becasue my son, who takes karate from him, told him my chest was hurting again, he did confirm with me that I was still feeling bad but then walked over to initiate the treatment. My main questions are: 1) is it possible for a reiki practicioner to know intutively when someone needs a treatment? I am a Tai Chi student of his and he knows me and knows that I am open to reiki but also knows I am stubborn and do not like to ask for help all the time. I have always had an interest in natural healing and really want to take reiki classes but feel that reiki is something you don't enter into with a cavalier type of attitude. This practicioner has had a lot of training in this area and has had several people express a desire to learn, with me being one of those, but he has not given any concrete answer on whether or not he plans to teach or share his knowlege. 2) can you really learn and receive attunements by DVD? I am willing to wait and take a face to face class with this gentleman as I feel that he will teach but when he feels ready, meanwhile I thought that if there are DVDs out there that can give me the knowledge now that I would check them out and if they really work then when I do a face to face class it will be a reaffirmation of what I have already learned as well as exposure to possible different methods. I feel that this person is who I should learn from in a person to person situation especially since he gve me my first two reiki treatments out of sincere concern. I figure you can never have too much knowledge. Sorry for the long post but I had to share.

Hi,

I wouldn't trust a DVD to learn from. You need attunements to do Reiki, and I doubt anything from a DVD would do it.

I think in a lot of cases, yes, practitioners might be able to sense another person's need for Reiki. You must understand, though, that Reiki practitioners are all individuals and abilities vary from one to the other.

walknred,

/*\ Namaste :-}}

- for myself?? I think the second Reiki 'treatment' he took it upon himself to administer was out of line (he did not have your permission to begin)

- even if you were OK with his 'initiation' based on some intuition he claims (which may have just as likely been familiarity with you) and know him well as a Tai Chi instructor, practitioners must ask permission first (though obviously not everyone agrees with me on this)

- as for attunements other than those received after hands-on training and practices?? Forget them! And, most especially stuff put on DVDs, CDs, etc.

- does intuition play a part in Reiki?? Intuition plays a part of some sort in almost all human activity - it is just that some folks do not put much stock in it or do anything to try and develop their 'other senses'

>:-}}

- and others rely too heavily on what they deem is intuition and may dismiss or ignore facts which may be available to clarify an issue

- hope this helps

I believe I need to clear up a couple of things from my first post. No intuition was claimed by this practicioner, that was just my own wonderings on whether or not people that are involved in the healing arts are more intuitive than those that may not be. Also I do have to say that in a general sense he did have my permission to do reiki, we had discussed reiki before in Tai Chi class and I do remember saying that I am very interested in learning about reiki and would like to receive treatments so feel free to give me a treatment if he knows that I am feeling bad. Granted that is not specific permission for treatment at the moment but more of a blanket permission. However knowing this person I know that had he not known 100% that I would have been open to accepting the treatment he never would have initiated it. He is familiar with the rules of administering treatments and felt comfortable proceeding, I think in part because it was for the same problem as earlier in the week and secondly because of our earlier converstions. Thanks for your input, I appreciate it.

- if someone is comfortable giving another person blanket permission to initiate a Reiki treatment at any time that, of course, is between those two people

- for myself? I always ask first and I also expect to be asked by others whether I am in the mood for a Reiki treatment (or not)

Otoharo!

You said one can never have too much knowledge or something like that. Knowledge is something of the brain, the head. Reiki has nothing to do with the head. Nor dsoes the head have any comprehension of reiki. I recommend waiting for class to form. It is well worth it in my experience.

You can educate the ego, but the ego can not know reiki.

By all means read up on it, if that is your wish, but I'd suggest to wait a while until this gentleman is ready to give attunements.

I knew next to nothing about reiki when I got initated. My teacher was clear on what I was getting myself into, so I had and informed choice at the outset.

Take your time and don't rush it. These things tend to 'happen' at the right time. So if it be next week or next year, that is the right time for you. Concentrate on getting well, first and foremost. then when your ready and the time is right so it will be.

Wrap up warm and take care.

Hello walknred..I am new to this site. I think the question you posted could recieve alot of different answers. I am a Reiki Master/Teacher. I believe and only in my opinion. You can tell when someone needs a Reiki session. In my friends and family I can feel it. You sometimes can just get the essence from them. In giving them Distance Reiki that can be in some peoples opinion a tuff one. Alot of people in the reiki community feel you need permission. Sometimes it is possible and other times it is not. When you cannot ask directly for their permission, "I just put it out there." I believe that it will either be accepted by them or go to where it is needed. As for learning from a DVD. You could attain some knowledge from them for your journey through Reiki. I do believe though that an attunement and learning should be given to you through a qualifed Master/Teacher. Hope this helped.

walknred,

If you were trying to have a child would you have sex through a DVD? :-)

I know that sounds pretty ridiculous but so do the attunements by DVD to me. I'm sure that there are some people who believe that they have received an attunement through this process but then there are also people who believe they are pregnant and show all the symptoms without actually being pregnant.

A distant attunement by a Trusted person is, while not the preferable way to receive an attunement, infinitely better than wasting money on a DVD.

If the person in question is not willing to teach a class I would conclude that I wasn't 'meant' to learn from them and look for another instructor. If you think he will eventually teach then by all means wait, or take the class from someone else in the interim and then again when he makes his decision.

Rebecca
