An alternative to smudging is to charge up a bottle of water and then spray it around the room. It's worked well for me, anyway.

I think there are many ways to clear, but what is most important is, like Reiki, being mindful and having the intention of clearing.

You named very good ways to clear. If they connect well with you, use them.

And also you are kind to be so considerate of the person's situation, not using burning sage. I think that is really important, too. (I have used sage, but not burned it already because of allergies or sensitivities. I just visualize it burning.)

I have also used various Reiki symbols to clear. I was taught this in Reiki 2, using distance symbol to send ahead of me and emotional and power symbols on all walls, ceiling and floor.

For personal clearing, I also love a good salt soak (prefer sea salt as opposed to epsom, but that's just me. :-)

Also connecting with Mother Earth in a physical way with ground, water, sand, plants, etc. takes the negative energy away. (Bless Her for taking it.)

But clearing, also involves my allowing what's negative to leave. I need to release it in whatever way feels right, and that is different again depending on the situation.

I'm sorry to be so vague, but I really try to pay attention to what is needed in the moment, more than have something specific.

But if you need something specific, then do that. It's really what I think you connect well with.

Thank you, it is very helpful and I am truly grateful :) I have very little experience of working with cancer so I am aware that the cleansing methods that I usually rely on may not be enough.

Funny you mention Mother Earth; I have had an overwhelming urge over the past few weeks to be around nature, especially trees! :) Once a week myself and the clan have been setting much needed time aside to just be around nature. Your post has just made me realise why :)

I know that smell very well. When I was very young we visited one of my aunts who was caring for her mother in law who was in the final stages of cancer. The two things I remember are the woman in a hospital bed in the dining room and the horrible smell. If it weren't for that smell I probably would have long since forgotten all about it. The closest thing I can relate it to is acetone.

As for other ways of clearing, Priestess once gave me this, repeat three times with conviction. "Anything that is not mine must leave now" It has worked for me on many occasions.

I think I know the smell you talk of. It lingers in your nose well after treatment. For a few days for me. To me it is like the smell of death if that makes since. I volunteeer at a hospice last stages of cancer before death. I was told there really isn't much we can do other than work on making their passing more comfortable and ease some of their pain. I have a hard time excepting this. I felt such severe heat comming out of a few patients in the tumor area that I broke out in a sweat and nearly passed out, But held on threw it to break up the stuck energy. I am having difficulty returning to hospice after the smell hung in my nose and I smelt it for days after my last visit. I would feel better if i could treat the ones at home with a few months to live yet. I am going to have to ask them if there is a possibility of this.
