Mindfulness in a nutshell

Recall a simple and ancient truth: the subject of knowledge cannot exist independantly from the object of knowledge. To see is to see something. To hear is to hear something. To be angry is to be angry over something. Hope is hope for something. Thinking is thinking about something. When the object of knowledge (the something) is not present, there can be no subject of knowledge. The practitioner meditates on mind and, by so doing, is able to see the interdependance of the subject of knowledge and the object of knowledge. When we practise mindfulness of breath, then the knowledge of breath is mind. When we practise mindfulness of the body, then the knowledge of body is mind. When we practise mindfulness of objects outside ourselves, then the knowledge of these objects is also mind. Therefore the contemplation of the nature of interdependance of all objects is also the contemplation of the mind. Every object of the mind is itself mind. (taken from 'the miracle of mindfulness' by Thich Nhat Hanh.) *i hope these words bring the same magic into your lives as it did mine. I give thanks to Mr. Hanh. love and lots of light.

Lizardking,

/*\ Namaste :-}}

- in a nutshell? how about on a pin head? or perphaps filling an ocean??

>:-}}

- you quoted Mr. Hanh: "Hope is hope for something."

- if he truly said this, then as a buddhist he surely knows that hope is one of the primary sources of suffering

>:-}}

- I would offer that mindfulness is an ethic one applies to ones practices and living (it is more than an intellectual didactic or philosophical 'object')

Good points, firekeeper. I assume that it is his words as his name is on the cover of the book. But i think hes trying to get his idea across by making an example. And not making a statement. And yes, mindfulness is not just a philosophical object, as a way of life. so i should probably have chosen a different title. I just wanted to share his thoughts to show that the mind is one with all. Thus, we are all one. But that is just my opinion. Thanks for your reply. Love and buckets full of light. :-)
