HI EVERY ONE, HOPE YOUR ALL WELL,.. & A "HAPPY NEW YEAR" 009
I HAVE A QUESTION?.....
I DON'T KNOW 'WHAT THESE WORDS MEAN?....
NAMASTE?
OTOHARO?
ARATI?
TIORAIDH? ETC....
(& THERE ARE 'MORE')......I NEVER CAME ACROSS ANY OF THESE IN MY REIKI TRAINING!!?
SO WHERE DO THEY COME FROM? & WHY?, WHAT DO THEY MEAN & WHAT PLACE DO THEY HAVE IN 'REIKI'?.....
WHY CAN'T FOLK SAY HELLO, & GOODBYE ETC?
SEEMS A LITTLE EGOTISTIC TO ME TO USE WORDS 'OTHERS' (NOT INTO REIKI..) WOULD NOT HAVE A CLUE ABOUT....MAKES ONE THINK OF THESE FOLKS AS SOME THING 'SPECIAL'....
I AM 'REIKI' BUT STILL DON'T HAVE A CLUE????NEVER HEARD OF ANY OF THESE IN ALL MY YEARS OF BEING REIKI....
I MEAN ''''NO OFFENSE BY THIS POST''''...JUST DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY SOME PEOPLE HAVE TO SIGN IN/OFF SO DIFFERENTLY??
I LOVE YOU ALL .....:) XXX
PLEASE....WHY, & WHAT DO THESE MEAN?

wendy,
Hi,
And, I might ask, what does your question actually have to do with the discussion of Reiki? This is the Reiki Discussion board, afterall. :)
Cheers (salutation and adieu terms may be easily found on the internet)

NO PROBLEM WENDYOZ.
THE ONLY STUPID QUESTION
IS THE ONE NEVER ASKED.
WE LEARN FORM EACH OTHER
SOMETIMES I'M IN A GROCERY
STORE AND A CONVERSATION
STRIKES UP ABOUT SOMETHING
UN-RELATED TO GROCERIES I'VE
NEVER HEARD ANYONE CUT OFF
SUCH A CONVERSATION CAUSE IT
WAS NOT GROCERY RELATED. WE
CAN LEARN SOMETHING NEW IN THE
STRANGEST PLACES.
I LEAVE YOU WITH,
NAMASTE = PAY HOMAGE TO THE INNER LIGHT IN ALL LIVING THINGS

Wendyoz,
Most of these words are either greetings, salutations or expressions of goodbye.
Tioraidh, for example, is "bye" in Gaidhlig. It is the language of my ancestors and I feel perfectly justified in using it.
I really don't see the necessity for such a tirade against the use of different languages. Many people who are not of Italian extraction like to say "ciao", for example.Even "Hi' most probably derives from the Norwegian or Swedish "Hey" or "Hej"
It is not difficult to google them to find a translation, but I would have thought that their position in a post would give some indication of the context they are used in.
I notice that you do not seem to have any objections to using the word "Reiki" which is Japanese in origin.
Incidentally, although this is an English language site, it is also international in membership and if members wish to express themselves in their native language, or indeed in a language pertaining to their belief system, their choice should be respected.
Hope this helps and, so as not to upset you,
bye.

Hi, Well tough titties can be painful. I withdraw that remark. lol.
I'm good ponderings. I reckon that it might be as rc suggests and it is the pc fault.
Maybe it does make it easier to read in hindsight it being in capitals, but its hard to read on the eyes. or mine in particular.
I often wondered what those words ment wendoz, as well. But, thought that it was either a greeting or a fond farewell in a language(s) I didn't understand.
Slan.
(Somehow my 'goodbye' isn't as exotic as some others here, but in gaeilge My native tounge, its a derivative of Slainte, which means health, but the shortened means 'health be with you' as I leave. also good wishes, or good health. till we meet again or some such)

WELL EXCUSE ME SIR!....CELTICC.....
I AM NOT HAVING A 'GO' AT ANYONE!!!!... JUST ASKING A SIMPLE 'Q ' AS TO THE 'MEANING OF THESE WORDS!!!!
I HAVE 'NOT' BEEN DISRESPECTFUL AT ALL'??....
THIS I DO NOT THINK WAS AT ALL 'NECESSARY & REALLY QUITE OUT OF PLACE'...SEEING AS IT IS THE 'REIKI CAFE'
QUOTE<I notice that you do not seem to have any objections to using the word "Reiki" which is Japanese in origin. UNQUOTE>.....THAT TO ME IS A BIT OVER THE TOP & QUITE A SILLY STATEMENT!!!!!!
*SOINEANN* WAS VERY HELPFUL IN TELLING ME 'WHAT'..'NAMASTE' MEANS......(WHICH IS QUITE LOVELY...)& I THANK HER..
BUT I WILL SAY THIS....." I THINK IT IS STILL A LITTLE 'EGOTISTIC'.....TO TRY & MAKE A REIKI PERSON 'SEEM SOOOO 'SPECIAL & DIFFERENT' FROM THE REST OF OTHER PEOPLE...CUS WE ARE NOT"!!.....
LOTS OF 'NON REIKI' PEOPLE READ THIS BOARD OUT OF INTEREST & MAYBE THE THOUGHT OF LEARNING IT ETC.... :)
THIS CAN BE A LITTLE 'OFF PUTTING' AS '''THEY'''' ALSO WOULD NOT UNDERSTAND WHAT THE HECK THESE NAMES WERE ALL ABOUT!!!

Dear Wendy,
Allowing that all questions are encouraged and welcomed, a few thoughts come to mind:
Any of those terms you could easily get info about as you are sitting in front of an internet linked computer.
"WHY CAN'T FOLK SAY HELLO, & GOODBYE ETC?"
It sounds there like you are slightly put off by people using words that are not within your zone of comfort and familiarity. There are many languages in the world and with those a gazillion sub dialects. We live in an increasing cross pollinated cultural world to include language.
Especially in the Spiritual realm, there are words not in the English language but can be found in other languages such as "namaste" or "OTOHARO". The person using a given unfamiliar word is not trying to be fancy or high-folluting.
namaste,
Michael
p.s. Arati is my screen name.

LOL...., ARATI, SORRY ABOUT THAT....
NO IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH ME FEELING 'UNCOMFORTABLE' WITH THESE WORDS, THEY DO NOT OFFEND OR UPSET ME IN ANY WAY!
IF YOU WERE WRITING A 'LETTER' TO SOME ONE ELSE, WOULD YOU STILL SIGN ON /OFF WITH A DIFFERENT LANGUAGE????
I JUST FEEL IT IS 'OFF PUTTING' TO NEW MEMBERS, OR NEW MEMBERS TO BE!!!...... & COULD MAKE THEM FEEL A LITTLE INFERIOR......
DOESN'T BOTHER ME A BIT, & I CAN'T FIND THEM ALL ON MY COMPUTER!

HI WENDY,
I UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU ARE SAYING ABOUT NEWBIES TO THE BOARD PERHAPS FINDING IT A BIT CONFUSING AND MAYBE AS MEMBERS WE SHOULD CONSIDER PUTTING A GLOSSARY OF THESE WORDS ON THE RESOURCES BOARD, THAT WAY PEOPLE COULD ADD THEIR INDIVIDUAL WORDS AND THEIR MEANING FOR OTHERS TO SEE.
HOWEVER I JUST DON'T FIND THE USE OF THESE WORDS EGOTISTICAL. TO ME THEY ARE JUST AN EXPRESSION OF EACH PERSON'S INDIVIDUALITY AND CULTURE. WHEN I FOUND OUT WHAT 'NAMASTE' MEANT (THE DIVINE IN ME HONOURS THE DIVINE IN YOU), I LOVED THE INTENTION BEHIND THE WORD SO MUCH THAT I WANTED TO START USING IT TOO. :)
I FOUND THIS FROM ONE OF FINALITY'S OLD POSTS HERE WHICH EXPLAINS 'OTOHARO'
"This greeting is from Chulan, the land legend calls Lemuria. It is a sentence:
Ot = that
o = I
ha = God Transcendent
har = God Emminant (the r is borrowed from ro)
ro = You
Put together is means, that, I , God Transcendent, God Emminent, and you are all one and the same. ONeness."
ANYHOW HOPE THIS HELPS :)
GENTLE BLESSINGS
HELEN

wendyoz,
Owdo lass.
Well, if you are not "having a go", you certainly do a very good impression.
Bagl! (burst a gut laughing)
Even the icon on your original post (poke with stick) supports that view.
Bagl, bagl.
On your original post, you stated that people using hello or goodbye in a language other than English, were being egotistical.
Is that a correct interpretation of it?
If it is, I am merely pointing out that you are happy to use the word Reiki, which is Japanese, rather than one of the many English translations of it,so why the problem with other languages being used to say hello or goodbye?
I really do not see how saying "Namaste" or anything else in any other language, implies that one is setting oneself apart from or above other mortals. However, if that is your opinion, you are entitled to it.
As I previously said, many people say "ciao" for goodbye be they of Italian origin or not and not only English speakers. Indeed, the English language itself is a hodge-podge of other languages. Our official language for 300 years or so was French. Then there are the Norse, Germanic and Gaelic influences which are still evident today. I am minded of an old Yorkshireman who had never left the Dale he was born in, speaking to a Professor and a visiting Norwegian lecturer. The old lad said "Weers ta bahn a lig?" The professor was at a loss to understand him but the Norwegian did. When asked how, he replied that the old lad was speaking Old Norse and he meant "Where are you going to lay your head" The richness and diversity of language should be celebrated in my opinion.
In all honesty,if you did not understand the words, it would have cost you nothing to ask what they meant, without all the following tirade and references to egotism. Perhaps a less combative approach might have been more fruitful in your quest for enlightenment?
I think your argument that people who have little or no knowledge of Reiki will be put off learning more by someone using "Namaste" at the beginning of a post or "Tioraidh" or "Slan" at the end, does not stand up to close examination. But, I have no doubt that we shall have to agree to differ on that.
Sorry for banging on a bit - hope it wasn't too boring and, by the way, I did tell you what "tioraidh" meant, right at the beginning of my reply.
Again, so as not to offend you,
Bye.
PS. No need to call me Sir - I have not been knighted in the New Years Honours............yet!!
Dont want to be either!!
Bagl, bagl, bagl.
Brian

It's interesting to hear different view points.
Some of us learn at different levels
and we process learning through different
styles. May be that's why we have so many
Reiki Systems. Language can be a barrier.
I am still working on the computer language
and finding ways to use the computer to be
more efficient. It can help you research
when you use the search box on top. I find
when I do that I can spend hours being sent
from here to there learning much on the way.
Since I don't have a visual handicap it can
be more fun than a hassle. Not everyone wants
to be challenged searching even when they have
20/20 vision.
Reiki Blessings to all.
