Helping when hospitals have to cut back

I just saw the 60 Minutes spot on University Medical Center in Las Vegas, having to close important outpatient services due to a huge budget shortfall. Impact documented: patients going without chemotherapy or other oncology services for life-threatening cancers.

Hospitals around the country are feeling the squeeze of the "recession".

Why can't Reiki folks in the hard-hit areas organize to serve the patients left in the lurch -- at the least people can get comfort and pain relief, and maybe a little more energy to battle the system for their essential surgery or other conventional treatments. And, some people will experience miracles, as we all have seen.

On the Reiki Cafe, there are 18 people listed as living in Nevada. Why not find a vacant storefront somewhere, there must be plenty of them, and offer a weekly, even daily, walk-in Reiki clinic?

We haven't seen the worst of things here in Maine, yet, though the hospitals are having to watch their pennies, there are no stories of patients' treatment being interrupted, yet.

Remember the example of Dr. Usui helping earthquake victims. This economy is no less than an earthquake in millions of lives. Let's step up to the plate!

Blessings,
Aronaya

Great idea. I would think that the hospitals would provide a space so folks have access to Reiki sessions. Hospitals in states like Maine, Massachusetts, already have Reiki available for their patients. I'm sure there are other states that also provide hospital volunteer Reiki services.

aronaya,

/*\ Namaste :-}}

- thanks for mentioning this

- apart from any mustering of Reiki practitioners to offer services there locally (some of whom may have full time jobs), I would also expect that some if not all of the patients would be referred on to other hospitals\centers that do cancer treatment (and hopefully not too far for they and their families to travel)

Yes, the referrals were part of the story. One oncologist set up a chemotherapy room in his shared private practice, and he and his partners did fundraising and subsidized continued treatment out of their own pocket.

Other patients were not so fortunate, spending months calling practices on the referral list only to be told their insurance wasn't taken (Medicare, or Medicaid, I think). One man with lung cancer had been untreated for five months.

I suspect we'll see more of this in the U.S. this year. How about other countries? Is the financial crisis affecting essential treatment, or do those with national health care have more resilience to continue to serve all income levels?

HERE IN AUSTRALIA THE GOV: HAS 'PULLED OUR MONEY BELTS' IN VERY TIGHT...
WE DO STILL GET TREATMENT FOR WHAT AILS US, BUT THE WAITING TIME IS LONGER, PLUS 'WE',I, ( PENSIONERS!) WHICH WAS UNHEARD OFF BEFORE!)HAVE TO PAY FOR SO MUCH MORE....SOMETIMES 'VERY HARD' WHEN WE ARE ON THE LOWEST 'BASIC' PENSION $$s...(WAGE, IN AUSTRALIA..)

WHICH IS THE VERY 'LOWEST' OF ALL MONEY, HARD TO LIVE ON, BUT WE ARE STILL A VERY LUCKY COUNTRY....JUST HAVE TO GO BACK TO THE 'OLDER WAY OF LIVING'....WHICH IN A WAY IS GOOD...(SHOWING MY AGE HERE ;)
THINK TWICE ABOUT USING THE CAR, (RUNNING COSTS..) THINKING OF GROWING MORE VEG:.......HERE I AM LUCKY, AS I 'DO' REMEMBER HOW TO CUT BACK & DO THINGS 'THE OLD WAY'....A LOT OF THE YOUNGER ONES DON'T KNOW 'HOW' TO PUT A MEAL TO-GETHER FOR JUST A FEW $$'s ETC.....

LIFE OVER HERE IS 'SLOWING DOWN'....NOT SO MUCH LIVING IN THE 'FAST' LANE, PEOPLE ARE STAYING HOME MORE...BUT ON THE '''BAD SIDE'' MUCH MORE CRIME & BREAK IN'S,...SO MANY ""ANGRY PEOPLE""....

THE YOUNG ARE BATTLING HOW EVER, WITH THEIR FANCY HOUSES & BIG MORGAGES....& WE ARE GETTING A LOT MORE UNEMPLOYMENT & JOB LOSS'S....THEY ARE HAVING THEIR HOUSES RE-POSEST...SOME, BUT THE INTEREST RATES ARE DROPPING RAPIDLY SO THIS MUST HELP THEM SOME WHAT...

GEE, SORRY, GOT OFF TOPIC HERE!
I THINK WE HAVE 'NOT' SEEN THE WORST YET, & THERE WILL BE MORE CUTS TO THE MEDICAL FIELD...
HAVE A GREAT DAY....
