i am a reiki master living and practicing in virginia. i have some unusual physical occurances sometimes when i am doing reiki on someone, especially someone close to me (husband and son). my body seems to be getting a huge surge through it and it shakes violently, like a seizure. however, i am fully concious and do not hurt. it is quite exhausting and it feels as if someone is "connecting" with me. i also have these physical episodes by myself when i am very, very stressed out and i can feel them coming on. i used to think that i was "expelling" negative things from myself, but now i am beginning to think that it is a rush of energy INTO me. i think someone is helping me out. i have a disease called fibromyalgia, but i am working fulltime still and raising a husband and 9 yr. old son! i am wondering if anyone else gets this type of tremor going or has any different physical reactions. i don't fear this, but i wonder about it. as i said, my limbs shake violently, almost in a rippling effect and i get quite a workout! :) it doesn't happen all of the time, but recently i have gotten slight shakes in my arms when working on people who have definite ills or pains.

Dear easygoing,
Several thoughts come to mind.
Have you been checked by your physician to rule out true tremors or seizures or other disorders?
Is it possible since this often happens when working with those close to you that you are taking on the negative energy of those you love? In this regard, perhaps extra grounding work prior to beginning a treatment would be beneficial. In addition, visualize yourself as a channel thru which the energy flows & see any ills, pains or negativity released into the ground away from you to be transformed by Mother Earth.
I have had mild shakiness & other physical sensations when another was deliberately sending energy to me. But I believe that at these times it was not Reiki or not "just" Reiki but personal energy as well. There have been times when I felt Reiki energy sent into me without my prior OK.
Hope this helps but there will be more posts to help you as well.
Namaste,
holobon

i have spent way too much time in the doctor's office, and the general consensus all these years has been that these things were anxiety attacks. previously, they were attached to panic, but now they rarely are. i have had mri's done on my head, but nothing specific for seizures. my husband was convinced that the energy wasn't for him, but believe me, he had a powerful reaction to the treatment given to him. he had some very blocked chakras, and he had two treatments, both about 45-60 minutes long. during these things i was very "active" to say the least. i probably could do more to ground myself, but i don't know that this is necessarily a bad thing other than it is ugly i presume to look at. my husband and son think it is funny and it doesn't bother them. however, i have had these prior to surgery or in emergency rooms and some of the nurses didn't know what to think either. the first reiki treatment i ever received was at the edgar cayce foundation and for over 1 hour i was in one of these seizure things, flopping around on the table. the reiki master giving me the treatment said she had never felt anything like that, that her feet were vibrating and flopping around from the energy running through her into me. she also said that the room was filled with many, many people, but i didn't see or hear anything. strange, huh? in any case, i don't know what any of it means. i wish i knew who or what was surging me, because i feel like something big connects to me, and the energy is so powerful it almost burns me out. however, i am not in any pain, and i generally profit from the experience. i just wish it weren't so visible! :)

Dear easygoing,
Anxiety seems to be the answer when they cant find another reason :) Seems to me there are alot of anxious people running around these days..LOL.
Perhaps there is more than just Reiki at work? Reiki generally does not burn us out.
Grounding may work if excess energy is causing the shaking. It does not alter the effectiveness or depth of a treatment.
Hopefully there will be more responses forth coming for you.

Lucky you. I know a lot of people who want to see the energy. Please don't worry. The energy flowing through is for you and your client. I shake, shudder and laugh alot with REIKI. Usually, I really want to help the client and I am sending some of my energy. Take a step back in your mind and thank your guides & angels for the help and let them take over.
The room full of people helping are your angels, guides and all the ancestors before you. Your ancestors are part of your genetic make up they are always part of you and always wanting to help. To be surrounded by loved ones is truly a blessing.
Light and love

Easyyoung,
/*\ Namaste :-}}
Welcome to The Cafe. :-}}
I am glad for your voice and light.
- it is taught that reiki practices do not use "personal energy" - thus ought not be "draining"
- if one feels drained after any type of energy work one has used one's own energy - and in certain types of energy work this is 'expected'
>;-}}
- but not reiki practices
- taking on the "negative" energy of someone else can be draining - partly because then one must deal with all this extra stuff with one's own energy
- really not a happy situation
- it is also not unknown that a practitioner might "experience" briefly spme aspect of that for which the client has come
- as for the shaking you mention?? hard to be sure since Iwas not there
but...
- of the people I have enountered at my hospital (through our pain clinic) who have the diagnosis of fybromyalgia, a fair number do report some sort of "trembling" if they get fatigued - fatigued being included in the definition of "energy drain"
- I would suggest finding some ways to keep unwanted, draining energy out
- and be more Mindful of your own energy so that it does not get used during reiki practices
- is there more going on with you neurologically than fibromyalgia??
- do your "recipients" report anything during these sessions??
- If you know a Reiki Master who can do a series of Ketsueki-kokan with you I suggest this
Hope this helps.

thank you for responding. i had hoped i wasn't the only one out there with the shakes! i don't think i am giving too much of myself, since i don't concentrate on. i have people tell me when i do they get "surges" and they can feel an increase in everything. in any case, it is nice to know that i am not the only one out there with this kind of reaction.:)happy holidays

thank you for your advice! i do have muscle problems with my fibromyalgia, but it is mostly muscle weakness in my hands and legs, as well as my throat(i choke periodically). however, my episodes don't seem to be fibro related that i can tell. i feel sort of like an extension cord plugged into something, and occasionally i get a bit more energy flowing than my body seems to be able to handle. if i went out of it completely, i would think i was definitely having an epileptic seizure. however, i am conscious, and that isn't usually part of epilepsy as i have studied it. the other thought i have is that if i were to go out, i would wonder if someone or something was sort of taking over my body for a short period of time. once again, i am not out, so i don't think there is room enough at the "ellen inn" for two! it is a puzzling and different phenomenon, so i guess i will just have to accept it as it is. have a happy holiday season.

ellen,
/*\ Namaste :-}}
- with already "weakened" musculature it is possible that either an energy drain (fatigue too) or an unexpected energy in-rush could precipitate the "spasming" - if the nervous system is already a bit "edgy", abrupt energy movements could be "triggers"
- an energy drain (just as an energy in-flux) involves the movement of energy which could precipitate the reaction
- I only ask about other neurological aspects (seizures was not my target) since there are other conditions where "shakes can occur as you describe -
- multiple schlerosis and Parkinson's were what came to Mind

Hi easyoung,
Like you I have experienced energy surges. It has taught me that what be says is true. I have discovered that these 'energy surges' are usually guides coming in too strongly, and all you have to do is to 'ask' them to step back until your frequency and theirs are more compatible.
This works for me, so I hope it helps for you too.

just out of curiousity, do you know who these guides are? are they the same ones? i think there may be 3 who work with me, and one of them is pretty powerful. however, i just seem to think this. haven't seen them, don't have proof! thanks for the response!

When feeling your own guides trust your own intuition.
I have a lot of my ancestors who participate. Let your mind open and you will feel who they are. You see them with your soul. I find that when I concentrate to much on "seeing" them I lose the message.
I think people are misunderstanding the Power surges.
They do not drain you but they scare you the first couple of times it happens. I feel honored to be able to feel the incredible energy coming through me to help others.
The guy that I am dating is very supportive for me on this spirtual journey. He has not had classes but his heart is so kind and tender. I had him do a REIKI session on me the other night. When reaching the Sacral I starting shaking and felt incredible blockages coming out. Back surgery and C section in that area. The power surge in reverse.
I see one of your guides but more importantly what do you see?
Love and light.

No easyoung, I don't 'know' who the guides are!!! (and for a 'need to know' person like me, that takes some trusting!!)
If you know one is more powerful than the others, 'ask' that guide to step back a bit and 'see' what happens to your energy then. I expect you will find that it will be a lot better for you then.
As be says (oh dear, repeating myself again!!) don't try to focus on your guides too much, they will just drift out of reach somehow.
Proof? yes you can ask for proff, and will probably get it:) ask for something simple and then wait. Try not to set any expectations on the outcome, as that too will create its own blockages:( but you will sooner or later be given proof that your guides are not'just your imagination!!
