Namaste,
Eve.
I have enjoyed reading your postings, and saw your reference to 'Mu' in one of them. In the manual I got with reiki one, it says 'that it is thought that reiki came from the Mu peoples and was taken to the Chinese/Tibetan area many thousands of years before Buddha's time and has been guarded by the Tibetan Monks ever since.'
Ever since then I have wondered who the 'Mu' people were? And wondered whether you know? (And from the context of 'Mu' in your posting, are they people, or is it a part of Buddhist philosophy?) L&L jonjo

jonjo,
Namaste.
May a non-buddhist take a stab at it? :-}}
Mu, in my limited understanding, is supposed to be the 'gateless barrier'in Zen but since that might be an answer too much of the discriminating mind, perhaps it requires further meditation.

Hi jonjo,
I believe that Mu was a place that existed here and was one of the starting places for races of beings on the planet. That is the Mu that the book is talking about. I think that the other Mu is the same word that might mean a similar place or race of people or it could be a word that just happens to be the same but means something different. Like the word "hallalujah" means "sunny day" in Chinese.
Why not look up Mu in the search engine on your computer. I bet there will be tons of Mu web pages there.
Love you !
Joanna

Joanna, Thanks for your thoughts. I must admit to having tried the search engines when I first foined the'Net -without success- Perhaps, now I am a bit more au fait with proceedures I might have more luck.
The way you describe it makes me think of Atlantis. Is it real, is it not? If it is, where is etc.? Gives me a lot to thnik about. Thanks again. jonjo

Firekeeper,
Namaste.
As ever a font of wisdom and provocotive thought making suggestions:0)). I love 'em.
Thanks for you thoughts. I have not studdied Buddhism, which I why I found Eve's posting so interesting. It widens one's perspective. I like the idea of gateless barries. The ones I'm coming up against may not have any gates, but are sure obstructed by a lot of thick brambles!!!
:-))) lol.
It is thanks to everyone on these boards that I am learning how to high jump!!!
PS. What does 'Sat Nam' mean? I take it this is something to do with your new course??????

Jonjo,
Real? What is real? Do you think that's air your breathing?
Sorry I was stuck in the Matrix...
As far as I can see a lot of different cultures talk about it. Who is to say what future is, or the past. It is a fun thing to research though. Did you check it out yet?

jonjo,
Sat Nam.
As I understand it -
- Mu, roughly meaning 'not' or 'no', is the answer of the Master to the question of whether a dog is possessed of the Buddha Nature.
A problematic answer because they may very well have Buddha Nature in which case the Master has 'overspoken' the Buddha - :-}} likewise, if the response is Yes, then the next quetions might be 'how is this so?' :-}}
It is a problem of the 'discriminating mind' - one the discriminating mind cannot solve.
:-}}
Sat Nam? An expression of respect and well being.

Joanna,
Namaste,
What's with the Matrix? Next time, if I know you are stuck in Matrix, I'll keep my head down:))))) lol.
No, I ve not done any more research, been out all afternoon, giving reiki to a really 'beautiful' lady. Will go hunting, (and hope I don't find any snipe lurking...)
The book is still 'ongoing'. Somewhere along the line, it changed direction, but didn't give me the route map:-)) so am doing a major re-think there. Thanks for asking. Any words of wisdom or thoughts on healing generally, will be most welcome. L&L jonjo

You do make me feel better:0)))'It is a problem of the 'dicriminating mind' - one the discriminating mind cannot solve.'
And I used to get so worried when I couldn't solve my problems.!!! Next time that happens, I'll just think of dogs with Buddhist Natures!!!
I just knew the solution to my problem was out there somewhere:0)))) lol.

Hi, janjo!
Thanks for your question - in the context of my post, "Mu" (which is a Chinese symbol meaning "no-thing" or "nay") in the Zen sense is really neither yes or no, but a "no thing" that transcends either. It is not "nothing-ness" (as in the opposite of existence) but the expression of being in the realm of the Tao, if you will - the liberated *experience* of inter-being. Just as the useful part of the water jar is it's emptiness, we are vessels at once the vessel and not the vessel.
The koan that firekeeper refers to is called "Joshu's Dog" and is quite famous - it goes like this:
"Has a dog Buddha-nature?
This is the most serious question of all.
If you say "yes" or "no",
You lose your own Buddha nature!"
Talk about frustrating when first approaching this koan! I kept arguing that of course a dog has Buddha nature! We all do! (Which was met with gales of laughter from my sensei!)
This koan has also led to the famous expression "If you meet the Buddha on the road - kill him!" What this quote means in the context of Joshu's Dog (and I found equally frustrating for ages!) is not to promote violence, but rather to help us break through the "barrier of the patriarchs" - meaning that it's not our intellect that will lead us to awakening, but rather, a realization of the "mind" (heart center) that we *are* that.
It is said that when one enters this Mu, they are as a candle illuminating the whole universe.
Now, for the second part of your question - there are several legends of the people of "Mu" - the Hawaiian Kanhuna's believe that their race springs from these island dwellers who are said to be highly spiritual and healers. I think that there are other legends about these people as well. I have a book on Kahunna healing that talks about this - I'll look it up and post more later.
I hope I'm not going over-board here with all the Buddhism posts - I do think it's good to explore some of the concepts of Buddhism though, since Reiki's roots have touched Buddhism. :)
A couple of resources include:
my website also has a resources page to explore:
Enjoy! :)

Eve,
Namaste.
Thank you for your reply. As you say, when you are unfamiliar with the concepts of Buddhism, it takes some getting to grips with the philosophy. But I will visit those sites you've recommended.
And thank you, I shall look forward to learning what you come across in your books about the Mu people. It makes sense that they are refered to as healers, since that is where my manual says reiki comes from.
Who knows where this path will lead? Another adventure awaits...

Jonjo,
Well....... just let me spend a day away from this board, I come back and find I adopted a cat!!!. Not only adopted one, but one that can't even catch a snipe. What a pretty picture that makes! (wipes tear from eye and sniffs at thought of such a sad picture...)
The familiar for this priestess is a dog. Singular and spoiled.... :-) He thinks he was born to be an only child!

jonjo,
Namaste.
Ran across a relative of Hamish the Haggis.
Turned me on to some excellent haggis when I was salmon fishing near Borgie on the River Forss - it was called Dornoch Haggis. It was really most tasty.
Also had steak and snipe pie but I like the US snipe a little better. :-}}

Alright Jonjo,
You made me laugh! ;)
The whole "air thing" came from the movie the Matrix. It was a very good movie about what is "real" and "not real" I highly suguest it!
Anyone else seen it?
Best wishes,

Priestess,
Namaste.
- And here I was telling my cats about your 'cat' - they will not be pleased it is a 'dog' - maybe it is a shape-shifters?
- however, my snipes will breath a sigh of relief. They do not need any more cats after them.

Firekeeper,
I am sure your cats are lovely. No, I am positive my dog is not a shape-shifter not a cat anyway. He may possibly be digging a tunnel to meet your cats, however....... there is a good start on one in my back yard.
He does chase anything that will run, however... I doubt a snipe would find him good company!!!! L&L Priestess
