Pain while giving Reiki

As a new Reiki Practitioner I have a question. While doing a treatment, I find that at times I experience some slight pain in certain parts of the body, only to discover that it is the same location the client is experiencing the pain. Any comments, as I was told this shouldn't occur.

Yes, that is actually fairly common from what i have heard. Though i rarely experience it myself. My teacher had mentioned it when i learned Reiki as well as reading about it and meeting a few people whoe xperience the same thing. Some people are just recpetive like that. It's kind of like your body telling you this is the hurt area even if the patient never mentions it you should bring it up to them if you experience it and don;t know if it's them or not. I have never heard of this being a dangerous experience. But if you do detect pain in such a manner i would be careful when treating someone in extremely severe chronic pain as it may be cause you extreme discomfort as well( if you know how to shield i would suggest doing that if it's ever bothersome, if it isn't then just go with it and add that to the your methods of recieving impressions from people in regards to their healing)

Copper,

/*\ Namaste :-}}

- I am not sure why you were told this "should not" occur??

- "sympathetic connections" via the energiews involved can be made between Practitioners and Recipients at many levels -

- sometimes it is the Recipient who may sense things going on with Practitioner

>:-}}

- question is, how often do Practitioners "listen" to this feedback??

>:-}}

- hope this helps

Copper,

I was told that this does happen. I have experienced it the odd time. I was told to just say to it "thank you for making me aware, now go away". I always ask anyone that I am treating if they have any discomfort in this area.

hope this helps,
crystalgirl

i have also experienced this. once, during a treatment, i began to notice a sharp pain in my back. thinking it was due to my slightly bending over for hand positions, i found that adjusting my position did not help. after the treatment, the person told me that she had been bothered by back pain all week and the reiki helped it.
in areas with major blocks, the pain might be sharp. pay attention to what your body is telling you during a treatment.

YES!!! I have experienced this, several times, especially when treating a headache, but I wasn't told that I would, so I wasn't sure if this was normal. Bravo! Thanks for asking this question!

I have exsperienced this to. I read in one of my Reiki books that you can ask your Angels and guides to give you other signs instead of pain. They also said to wash your hands and proceed with the treatment. If it continues, if its to much for you to end the treatment for this time. I haven't tried this but I did read about it. Any other comments on this would be appreciated.

This happens to me almost everytime. Even if I just think about healing a specific person. As soon as I acknowledge it recedes and the energy flows.

It wasn't always this way. When I was first practicing Reiki, I would feel drained or even take on the sickness, i.e. my daughter had a tummy ache and I put my hands on her stomach. She was then fine and I threw up an hour later. My reiki master told me to ground myself so I did all those things and still I used to feel drained.

Another Reiki Master I know suggested that I ask my guides to give me clues and to make it clear that I do not want to be sick or drained. So I asked and received. Now the pain never lingers once I've acknowledged it and I no longer feel drained. It's neat.

Otoharo!

I began to notice that also as I was beginning. In time, I could recognise what was the problem by how I felt. In fact, sometimes I felt this before the client came for treatment. When I gave readings, I often dreamt the answer to the cleint's future question. These are very specific to you. You have to learn to interpret your own signals.

Hi,
Does anyone have an effective method of preventing the pain from ever occuring? I've been told that it occurs because the sender is sensitive.

namaste,

I think that if you are in the least sensitive to your clients, that this is going to come up.

In actuality, the pain will not be as great as theirs, because it isn't yours. It is simply there to let you know where to go...and a mental afirmation and thank you, will make it go away immediately. In time if you work on it, and ask your guides to give you a different sign, they will go away. I think in the beginning, it's important to be able to feel another's pain.

Just be sure to cleanse after, and ground.....

Blessings,

Priestess

Dear Copper (reminds me of a Walt Disney movie character),
This happened to me also when I started Reiki. I would move my hands to the area on the client that corresponded to my discomfort. That worked well, but my Reiki Teacher told me that I was falling back on an old way I knew of healing in a prior lifetime. She told me I had to simply ask to go to a higher level of healing and that I would no longer have the discomforts. They did not bother me, but my teacher said I needed to move on and leave this past behind. Well, I asked to be moved into the next level of healing, and after that, I rarely felt these things. After a few years of doing Reiki, most of my guidance now is just a "knowing" without a lot of "feeling" or "seeing" stuff.
Just one person's experience.
Blessings,
Feather

Excellent Posts for my place in Reiki at this time. I am just beginning to experience pain while doing Reiki, and what I'm learning, this is the spot that the client needs Reiki for healing. I am lerning so much from all of you via the posts. Plse keep up the good work.

I was doing long distance reiki last summer on a woman who was dying of cancer.I did long distance reiki on her several times. During one of the sessions i started feeling sharp stabbing pain in the knuckles of my right hand.It felt like someone was driving a knife throuh my knuckles as fast as they could. It was very painful almost unbearable.
It only last a few minutes but that was the "first" time I ever felt pain doing reiki. I found out later that she was having terrible problems with her rightside because of the cancer.Since then it isn't uncommon for me to feel pain or discomfort doing reiki.

I had a similar experience this Saturday working on a first time client. I've had some heat before, and sometimes really strong, but this was such a strong hot flash it made me feel ill. I got it while working on both the back and front of her solar plexis and sacral areas. I tried thanking my guides and asking them to let up, and it did not change. I finally had to move off of that area to get relief, because I was afraid I'd pass out on top of my client! I tried grounding the energy through my feet, also, but that didn't work either. I don't remember if I grounded before I began, but I usually do.

At any rate, while I didn't find it scary, because I knew it to be somewhat "normal", it was certainly unpleasant and disconcerting because it would not go away. If someone was trying to give me a signal that this person needed more Reiki on that spot, the signal was not efficient, because I had to STOP the Reiki connection in that area in order to go on. Left me a bit confused, I must say.
