Just wondering whether I received my first recollected experience of Astral travel last night!

My baby was awake from 2am until 3am last night. When she finally settled back to sleep, I went back to sleep. I suddenly felt myself jump off the bed and start to fly through the air above my body, I was so shocked that I yelled out waking both myself and my husband...as I woke, I literally felt myself being pulled back into my body and I had to really make sure that I was awake and really there , if you know what I mean. It was a really surreal experience, not unpleasant but it kind of freaked me out :))). I had been reading the thread that day on the other Reiki cafe bulletin board about 'Wierd night's sleep', so don't know whether I perhaps just had a vivid dream or whether I really did astral travel.

Is this what astral travel is all about?

Out-of-body is an astral experience. To travel astrally takes, for most, some practice.

It may occur during certain stages of sleep as you just found out, may be induced by you by putting yourself in that state of sleep, or can be done more "intentionally" - as a meditative type state.

Shamanic journey can be of this variety.

Well...I wasn't gonna bring it up, but... "HEEEELP!" *G*...
Honestly, for that last 2+ years, I've been trying to succeed at astral projection. I've tried the trance-methods, the visual-methods, and both failed for me considerably... I've had a near obsession initially, though that has faded back to just wondering if I ever will.. I've read enough resources, and tried enough methods that I have actually successfully gotten multiple people projecting..but sad, sad, I have never succeeded in projections except in the circumstances:

1) dreams (all dreams touch astral, in my belief)
2) lucid dream project - This has only happened to me when I just become lucid, my subconscious mind becoming conscious, I immediately "choose" (mostly subconsciously) to try to project....I never remember after that choice, just recall the "slip-away"...
3) waking up: On very rare occasions, I have woken up with my body in sleep state, and my mind half-asleep, I have also "subconsciously" chosen to "rollout"...the same fate...

I have memories of accidental dream Projections onto the physical that have been doublechecked by a person who specifically told me I had been there without my stating it...

This leaves me truly clueless... I really want to have lucid (rememberd) dreams, and lucid (remembered) projections, and have failed, through use of dream journels, every projection method under the sun, and countless other things.....any help??? (I Know this is a reiki forum :P)

Perhaps your 'wanting' is too intense. You are working at it too hard...

I also have wanted to 'travel'. The only time I have been successful at doing it, and was 'there' the entire time, was one evening, sitting in a salt bath, and thinking about my aunt in Calif. (I am in Georgia) who was very ill and in the hospital. I remember being very concerned about her and then I was there. Along with several reiki guides, we gave her 'hands on'..... I can still describe the hospital room that she was in. And when I came back in, I realized that my concern and love for her overrode my own concern about myself, and wanting to be in 'control'.

Like shape-shifting, once was lovely for me, and I don't NEED to do it again. It will happen as it is supposed to, for my lessons.

I have felt the overwhelming need to astrally project since before I knew that astral projection existed, or even that there was a for it...

I've tried by intentionally not trying too hard, taking several-day breaks of "not wanting" to, making myself a little apathetic in the process...

I've tried it when I had such need to get there, for the sake of another, and that also failed...

I honestly don't get -what- it is that is wrong with my attempts, because I don't try it when I have greater than "normal" desire to succeed on most given days...

I wonder, somewhat, if getting a reiki attunement will effect, for the better, my attempts to project...

I can only suggest that you are not yet ready for it.

Spirit is well aware of what you want. Perhaps you need to concentrate on other things to accomplish, for the time being. It sounds to me as if you are 'trying' too hard, even when you profess that you are not 'trying' for a few days...

You may want to look at the reasons that you are interested in doing this. Is this a personality desire, or something from spirit? I keep hearing something that is more personality on this board, but could be wrong. Enlightenment does not necessarily come with astral travel, or vice-versa. Priestess

I personally believe that I'm more ready than many I've seen. That sounds bigotted, I guess, but I've been projecting since childhood, and slowly that stoped...I remember it clearly, each projection like it happened to me on the physical plane...

I remember it, but can't touch it again...aprt of the stress is that

I think the problem lies in your "wanting" more than anything. The thing is, especially in magick or healing work, the number two besides harm none, would be, Hold no expectations.
It could be that in your past lives you focused too much on certain things and this life time there are other gifts you need to explore. I know that in the begining of my healing work all I wanted to do was "see". So I got frustrated and tried to see like everyone else and felt absolutly dumb, until I realized that I was suposed to develop my "feeling" ability. Then other things started to happen. You just need to find out what your gifts are and work with them first. You have all the time you need don't worry you will get there. Just work on a little at a time.

Well, I know I do it sooooo often... Especially to a certain place that draws me, but I can't do it consciously, and the fact is, I've always felt deep inside of me that my life will not be complete if I don't succeed at mastering that...

Reiki has nothing to do with astral travel per se. I feel that your personality is doing the wanting. As children we are able to do wonderous things that we have to re-learn as adults and have to de-program messages from others. There is a large difference between 'wanting' from the personality or from spirit.

Things from the 'spirit' will happen easily and naturally. Perhaps since you were a child, you have let your 'wanting' for such things as this that you may feel are 'important', has gotten in the way of your spirituality. Ask yourself 'why' it is important to you to do this consciously. Especially since everyone can do it unconsciously. What would you feel if you could do it consciously. Is it a matter of pride or accomplishment, or is it about spiritual growth...???

When you can forget YOURSELF in this matter, you will most likely succeed.

It was certainly a 'new' experience or at least one that I have not consciously remembered before.

as for the astral travel, since I don't have much sense of direction and am hopeless at map reading, think I'll leave that one for now :)))

As others have already noted, your desire to to this thing may be the block to it.

And, it is true that, for some (you also perhaps), what you seek will not be for you in this lifetime.

Having said all that - a couple of suggestions -

- time to calm the mind :-}}

- use whatever training you have for this - I will gladly suggest one that involves Reiki practice - since this is a Reiki board :-}}}} if you wish. Practice daily (or nightly) for at least a fortnight. No music if you can manage it.

- focus on your own deepest spiritual connections - what is it that "gets you in touch" - Wicca? Christianity? Sufism? Shamanism? etc.
