Hi all,
I am interested in how others utilize their symbols without being obvious, especially with someone new to Reiki that might be put off if they see you swirling the air with your fingers, so to speak. All of the people that I have worked on came to the Reiki clinic for the purpose of getting a treatment or were Reiki people themselves. Id like to approach people at work who have a need for a quickie ( sore neck, headache, etc)who have no idea what Reiki is but havent found a good way to "prepare" myself discretely. Expaining it is not the tough part, but the use of the symbols could be a problem in the workplace in a rather conservative part of the country.
Any suggestions? Its important to me to do this with sensitivity as Id like to eventually get Reiki into the local hospitals.
Namaste,
holobon

Hello,
Please visit my web site: and while you are there, I invite you to sign my guest book. Regarding "drawing the symols" for a Reiki sesson. They will work just as well if you visualize them (rather than draw them). If you have a problem with visualization, then "intent" that they activate, and that will work too.
Namaste,
Carol

Hi holobon,
Namaste ... :-}}
How`s about visualising the symbols maybe in mauve or gold as huge entities around you, in front of you, or over your client?

Namaste holobon!
I have done it a couple different ways. One is to draw the symbols on the palm of one hand using the other and then do the opposite hand, if I have time. In the situation you speak of for a 'quickie' I place my hands and visualize the symbols on the back of each hand, with the intention that they penetrate the hands. As mentioned earlier, in another answer, I have also visualized the symbols in large human size encompassing the entire individual. Hope this helps you!
I too hope to eventually get Reiki into the local hospitals, in this very conservative area!

Dear Carol,
Visualization is not a problem..I wasnt aware that that would work, however. Thank you for your help.

"The flag does not move. The wind does not move. It is Mind that moves".--6th Zen Patriarch
Intent allows the flow. With or without hand/finger motion this wonderful energy flows by Mind alone. It is not the pointing finger but the object of attention that is important in this case.

Dear Zizzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz,
HeHeHe...sorry, feel playful this am.
Actually, I usually do draw the symbols on my hands every morning.....I like the idea of visualizing it on the back of my hands as well.

Dear Toodlums,
Hello..long time no see!!!
Yes, I understand your "point"..I dont need to point!!!
I just realized that in my group we were taught to draw the symbols in the air or on our hands & Ive become so used to doing it that way that I never thought of pure visualization or just being totally in intention. Thank you for the reminder.
That is WHAT IS SO BEAUTIFUL ABOUT THIS SITE!!! Sharing experience & knowledge.

Holobon,
And, while you are visualizing the symbols, use your creativity and make them larger or move. They are not meant to be 'still' or quiet. SKR spins quite lovely and drops it's spiral down over the client in a nice protective way. SHK will 'walk' around the person, and HSZHN will 'walk in'. They are only limited by your imagination.

I realise that a reiki session is a symphony of a sort :-}}
However, as Maestra, in reiki, one is not obliged to wave the hands and fingers around - a baton is not required equipment.
>:-}}
- Simply visulizing the symbols is fine.
- Simply doing without them (muster your Intent and Mindfulness) is fine too.
Brava.

In a 'discreet' session I would 'draw' any symbols with my eyes, sort of inside my head. All that's seen from the outside is a strange woman nodding her head like one of these nodding dogs you get in the back windows of cars!! :-}}}
Good luck with the hospital thing. That would be so amazing.

Priestess,
Many thanks for your reply.
I now see these huge symbols walking around , hands behind their backs, waiting for direction.

Thank you, Firekeeper....
Thats what I was hoping for ...that mindfull intent was enough.
There is a certain comfort in drawing the symbols..the familiarity of ritual, I assume.
But there are times when another approach is best.

Dear lumpflink,
Oh my, you got me with that one.....sounds like it might be hard on your neck!! HeHe....
Thank you. Its going to be slow going especially since I tend toward the timid side more than the bold...and it may take great strength to forge ahead in the local medical community. But God works in mysterious ways!! :)

Holobon,
Love it!
I believe I read once where the monks would draw the symbols with their toungues on the roof of their mouth, to keep from sharing them with the uninitiated.
Tried it a few times myself, but much prefer the visualization method.
bagl.

Dear Priestess,
Tried it & I think that I would lose track of intent if I used my tongue which seems to have a mind of its own & appears intent on going its own way!!!
LOL....

dearest holobon
I know what you mean about 'educating' the medical profession. I have tried for a couple of years to get my doctor interested. I'm obviously doing something wrong because he just thinks I'm trying to initiate him into a new religion. I send him stuff to read too but I never get any replies.
One thing that bothers me though is that he's obviously not connected my lack of visits to him with my involvement with reiki. I was a long-time anti-depressant user (sic) when I first met him and he's seen me in all kinds of states. I haven't been to see him or to renew my prescriptions for about 18 months. You'd think that would give him food for thought at least!
(This is a very long story and is now in the past since I have worked through so much - I'm not advocating that everyone should stop taking their medication - added this in because it might sound like that - this particular journey wasn't easy but then neither was being depressed. This way felt much more relevant for me though than dosing myself with pills every day for the rest of my life.)
Back to the doctor - I met him one day in the supermarket a couple of months ago and we got chatting. He thought I wasn't his patient any more!! :-}}}
I'm rambling so I'll stop.
Keep on trucking and let us know how you get on. It would be good to hear from anyone else that have managed to work with medical staff and how they did it in the first place. I don't want to give this up but I'm worried about sending him further away if I push it.
Said I would stop so I will.
Love
Eleanor

- my preferred tactic is to intone a particular "symbol", whatever tradition it might be, as a Mantra - using the pranic work to "kick it up a notch".

Dear lumpflink,
Doctors do not want to stand out among their peers as "quacks". An alternative medecine MD who is also a medical doc is often ridiculed, shunned & not taken seriously. That is basically professional death in many areas of the country. Changes are taking place every day but like all revolutions are slow in coming.
Are you sending him/her articles from physician journals ( New England Journal of Medecine or the like?)? Mainstream newspaper articles or magazines may have no effect. Docs have little time to reply to patients these days...youd probably have to light a fire under his butt to get him to notice...they are scrambling to stay ahead of managed care these days & I feel for them...it is a very difficult business these days.
If I tell a medical professional that I am into Reiki they just nod at me like Im from out of space, 7/10 times. But hey, its those 3/10 people that can make the difference, right?

Namaste holobon:
You describe my area perfectly. In fact the same profesional death can occur to nurses as well. So it is with caution that I proceed. Very often I get that glazed over look, which tells me to be quiet and move on, but as you say....the 3 who listen and then may schedule a session is very important! All we can do is continue slowly and persistantly!

Hi Holobon:
Thanks for the greeting. So nice to hear from you, too. I have not visited for a while, true. I think it is wonderful that you may share Reiki with the hospitalized. And with or without visible hand signs I am sure you will bring much peace and relief to those who need it through your Reiki. :)
